What does one do when they have no health insurance and suffered a traumatic bpi? Boyfriend was involved in a motorcycle accident and is suffering from this. Accident happened on 3/16. He is in pain, no feeling in his arm. He has applied for emergency medical assistance, etc. but in the mean time has used most of his reserve cash for follow up doctor visits already. We are in the Philadelphia area. Is there any advice about who to see for help in this area? He is using the last of his savings to get an EMG in 2 weeks. I don't know what he will do after that. The hand center charges $200 just to walk in the door, that does not include the consult with the Drs.

Has he tried to apply for social security disability? When my son qualified for this then he received his medicaid card automatically. If he is unable to work he may be eligible. Maybe check that out. We had insurance that covered Dustin while he was a full time student but after his accident(11/02) we had to withdraw him from college. We are hoping he can return this next fall. Medicaid back dated the date because it took a couple of months for all the paperwork to be approved.

Wow sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how hard it is for you guys battling the system with no insurance. From what I read even if you have it you still have to pay out a lot.
Hopefully the EMG and MRI will help with the diagnosis, mayube you could send the results to a tbpi clinic. Mayo do some charity work but I don't know how you qualify.
Let us know how you go on.

sorry i know how you feel. my son had motorcycle accident in september 2004. he suffered a right brachial plexus injury, no movement, no feeling in arm just a lot of pain. he had no insurance. we have searched everywhere. we are trying social security. he has been turned down twice and now is before judge. mayo clinic said he was not an emergency so he didn't quality for assistance. you can check with the us gov for grants. my son does get food stamps which help us out some. christopher reeve foundation can give you some ideas where to look. good luck and God bless. He is the only thing that has kept us going

You may want to look into the Mayo Clinic under emergency status, being that if he doesn't have surgery with in two months, he'll lose any chance of regaining lost function in his muscles due to nerve injury and the amount of time it takes for nerves to regenerate. I wish you both the best.

Also, it takes a couple of months to book appointments at the Mayo, so if you're going to try, try it ASAP.

He'll loose any chance of regaining function if he doesn't have surgery within 2 mths? What is that based on? We were told it could take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to regain sensation (other than the excruciating pain he is in right now). Thanks for everyone's replies and suggestions.
