I found this site today and have spent a great deal of time reading the posts. My 19 yr old daughter has a ROBPI and I think she might be a candidate for mod-quad surgery. When she was born I had never even heard of this injury and to this day, have not met another person who suffers from it. Needless to say, it has been quite a day.
We would like to hear from anyone who had this surgery, whether as a child, teenager or adult. She has already sent her request to Dr. Nath's site asking for info. This is very exciting for her to find out there might be options available in addition to her PT/OT.
Also, if you had this surgery, what kind of experience did you have at his office, and with him? I am still quite overwhelmed about everything I have found out today, and cannot believe this is still happening! I am truly grateful for her ROM, and had no idea the extent of injury possible. She and I agree this (injury) had a more profound effect on me than her, and the decision to have surgery would be hers. How do I ever get over being too protective of her???
Thank you for any response. Paula Hayes
Adult who had mod-quad surgery?
Re: Adult who had mod-quad surgery?
Hi,
Sounds like the story of my life. Until last summer, I thought I was the only one in the universe with this type of injury. I had the Mod Quad January 12th. So far my active ROM has increased about 30 degrees. It's a slow, tedious process. I work at physical therapy several times a day. I'm glad I had the surgery. The most obvious difference I saw immediately was my posture completely changed. My shoulder now hangs in a much more natural position.. and the strain in my neck.. where the nerves were "pinched" isn't nearly as bad.
Feel free to email me anytime with additional questions... smckay317@hotmail.com. I would even be more than happy to talk to you over the phone. I talked with several other adults that had the surgery before I decided to do it.

Re: Adult who had mod-quad surgery?
I had the surgery 1/05 with Dr. Nath. I remember I was trying not to freak out the day before the surgery - I was 38 and had traveled from Oregon to Houston alone to have it done. The day before the surgery was the first I had met Dr. Nath and he had this instant calming effect on me, so much so that when I left I went on a shopping spree although I knew I couldn't wear any of the clothes for more than a month, had a big dinner and slept soundly.
My passive rom went from 45* to 178* within 6 months and active motion went from 22* to 114* so far.
The amount of work you have to do afterwards to stretch and strengthen is ongoing but it has completely changed my life and would have done it 20 years ago if I had known about it. I agree that my arm is now longer due to my shoulder sitting at a normal position instead of a bit hunched so clothes fit better and straps don't fall down anymore. With the therapy the deltoid is much bigger as well as the tricep being more balance with the bicep so I just look way more normal now. Love, love, love it and Dr. Nath. Suzy (503) 880-4682

Hello and welcome to the boards. I am 34 and had the mod quad with Dr. Nath. I too had a great expeience with his staff and Dr. Nath. He really does make a person feel comfortable and is willing to answer any questions you may have. My range of motion went up tremendously. Everyones situation is different however, I would recommend the surgery if he says its worth a try.

My son is 1 years with a ROBPI and I have contacted Dr. Nath. Today I actually spoke with him on the phone for 30 minutes. He was awesome. I felt as though he gave his honest opinion and was very helpful. It is amazing how far we have come in 19 years. Good luck to you and your daughter
Re: Adult who had mod-quad surgery?
Did anyone have pain relief w/ the mod-quad? That is my chief concern w/ deciding whether to get it done or not; will I have increased ROM, but still have the constant, nagging pain?
If any adult who has had the surgery can comment on this, it would help me a lot in my decision making process.
Thanks,
Yasmeen

Re: Adult who had mod-quad surgery?
Hello,
My name is Rachel. I am now 35 and had the mod-quad surgery about 4 years ago.
The first thing I always tell people is to remember every person's injury is different so you may not gain the same results.
The surgery worked great for me. I regained almost two inches in length in my arm and my suppination improved quite a bit. The pain subsided in my arm however, with over use as most things it still will hurt occasionally. My range of motion improved a lot as well. I was very glad the surgery worked as well as it did. I had the surgery done by Dr. Nath as well.
He is a fantastic doctor that truly does care about his patients.
Feel free to e mail me if you want any more questions answered.
Best of luck to you in your decision.

My son Frankie is 14 he had the mod quad on Nov 9th 2006. Before the surgery he had alot of pain and stiffness in his neck and shoulder after the surgery it all went away Dr Nath said it was due to tightness in his muscles Frankie feels that was the best part of the surgery being pain free he says he feels very loose now.
