Post by roxxy »

We found out right before m s had his muscle transfer surgery that his shoulder was dislocated due to his bpi. According to the dr this isnot uncommon. just wanted to know if anyone else has hadthis problem?

I think dislocation is fairly common among our children. My son was also dislocated prior to surgery and that was before he was 2. Unfortunately, deformity of the shoulder joint is a common issue, especially in children with internal rotation contractures.

Hello,

My son is now 5. A big part of the reason we decided on the particular surgery that we did was our hopes to address the dislocation. My son is three years post surgery and he is doing amazingly well.

Our doctor does follow up MRIs over the years to see if the humeral head is where it should be in the glenoid, or close to it, to see if the shoulder joint is remodeling, and to make sure the child is not dislocating again. So far my son is doing great and past MRIs have looked really good. We are due for our 3 year follow up MRI, so we will see.

You asked if my son is suffering a lot due to the dislocation, but since his surgery, dislocation hasn't been an issue. My son is an animal and does anything and everything he wants to, including tons of hanging, climbing, etc., and he has not dislocated since surgery (keeping my fingers crossed).

I sure hope your son can get some help to address the dislocation and that he isn't in too much pain, like you are worried about. Best wishes to you. If I can help in any way, please let me know.

Take care,
Lisa
