Patty,
I am so sorry to hear of your friend's injury. I have a tramatic bpi and was told that I waited too late for the type of help that would have taken the pain completely away. Time is of the essence, get your friend to Dr. Nath in Houston immediately. This injury must be examined by Dr. Nath to see if he can help your friend, but it must be done so within 1 year of the injury to get better results from any type of procedure that can help him/her from Dr. Nath. I have had to have a rib taken out in order to give the nerve and arteries room to heal. However, not all injuries are the same and each one is dealt with differently. However, Please get your friend to Dr. Nath. I cannot stress this enough.

Hi there, here is a website re brachial plexitis
http://www.aafp.org/afp/20001101/2067.html it seems slightly different from a bpi and the authors make a point of stressing that an accurate diagnosis is necessary to avoid unnecessary surgery. Make sure any specialist your friend may see is very experienced with adult onset injuries, many specialise mainly in infant obpi cases.
