I called the teachers supervisor today and her attitude had changed somewhat to the teachers point of view. "Well the lunch room is rather small and hard to manuever through." I told her I realized that and I'd be willing to come at lunchtime to help her and then take her home if it meant more time with her classmates.I also said I'd be willing to come during the morning to help with anything if the teacher is having problems with Michaela manuevering in class. She says their concern is for Michaela getting hurt.
As for the playground she says they are supposed to be giving Michaela a basket with things to do and she's supposed to be sitting under the tent. I told her Michaela says she's not, she's in the sun.
Then I got into the wetting incident and this is what I got.The reason that they cannot change the kids if they wet is the teachers who deal with special needs children and change wet clothes get paid 2 dollars more an hour and the union will not allow the other teachers to change wet kids. My response was,"In this special situation, who was going to know she changed my child. Was she going to report herself to the union?LOL Anyway, I brought up the school nurse deal, of having the school nurse change her as my friend had informed me they can do and she said oh yeh they can do that. So why wasn't it done ? Why does this teacher have to call me and sound like a 3 year old herself, "Mrs. Browning Michaela's wet her pants and you need to come change her." I still say no compassion. I wouldn't care what union I was in I'd help the child!
She did say Michaela could bring a friend to school with her a couple of days a week to help her and play with her during recess.Like an in school playdate. I know the teacher would love me for this one and would try it just to see what would happen. She also said that Michaela is a very social person and that's why she's so unhappy about the recess thing and lunchtime and that's understandable. She commented that Michaela is a very strong girl and they've seen her do more than they thought she could and this is the first time they've had a child with a handicap in the program and "We're charting new ground." So at this point I'm going to help them chart it!!
So as we left it she will talk to the teacher about these things and I'll know more tommorrow after the IEP meeting.
