Speech devlopment

Post by Cara »

I now some people have experinced speech delays due to surgeries and other reasons. I was wondering if any have had the opposite happen. Rosalynn had her 15 mo check up on Friday. The Dr. asked if she was saying anything more than Mom and Dad, when I said yes, probably about 20-30 words he looked shocked and said "I am not talking about the ones just you and her can understand" It pissed me off so we sat and made a list of the words she says regularly. There are actually 81 words that she uses. She can also follow two step commands like go to the bedroom and get your jacket or bring me a can of pop from the kitchen. My view is that we do a lot of talking, reading and singing. She interacts with mom, dad, granny, and her therapist. It makes sense that she would talk early. Anyone out there have an insight to speech development?

Hello,
My son is left bpi and lost oxygen at birth. He started talking very early too. He is now 3 and half and was recently tested for speech and came up about 5 year old speech. He uses prepositions, compound sentences, if, then clauses. At first I was worried about his speech as he just said words, but then around age two he took off. We have from very early age, read to him. He loves books and now will memorize the sentences and read the books himself. I think it really has to do with reading books to him.

Hi Cara, my daughter Michaela has lbpi and also lost oxygen at birth.I started reading to her when she was about 3 months old. By 18 months I took her for her checkup and the doctor was stunned that she was speaking in 3 word sentences. When we had her evaluated for the school system at age 3 she tested at 5 years 3 months for speech and 4 years 9 months for cognitive development. She missed the Kindergarten deadline by 1 month and 3 days. She was too too ready for school so I put her in the pre-k program. She is sooooo bored, but she needed the social skills since she's an only child. She can already write her name and knows her alphabet and numbers etc., so that's why she's bored. I continue to work with her at home. Keep up the good work! LeeAnne
