Countdown T minus 4 days

Post by ronin »

Appt w/Dr. Belzberg Weds.
I'm getting nervous.Looks like I picked the wrong time to give up Vodka and zanax.(joke) My nerves are shot out.Been smoking cigarettes like a mad man. Can't sleep either. I have a vague urge to just cancel it all, instead of get set up for more disappointment.Oh well. Nothin to lose and I get a trip to Baltimore---never been there.---Ronin

Hi Ronin,
You've worked so hard to get face to face w/Dr Belzberg - you'll be glad for it once you're there. I don't know where you live, but we'd never been to Baltimore (we're in California) and we really enjoyed the Inner Harbor. Dr Belzberg is very kind and patient, and you'll feel free to ask all your questions/concerns. I hope he is able to provide some relief for you. Keep us posted!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Good luck Ronin!
Do you have a list of questions to ask the doc? It's definitely worth writing them down and taking the list in with you. I always think of the really good ones AFTER the appointment which is no good to anyone.
Let us know how you go

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Good Luck Ronin
I think Jenny has given you a good piece of advice.
I am sure you have tons of questions and if you write them down you will make sure to get to all of them.
I have met him and he is very nice you will feel very comfortable with him.
I really hope he can help you and you will get some relief.

I think those are normal and valid feelings! Just try to relax with whatever you enjoy most--music, friends, etc.
We'll be thinking of you and anxious to hear how it all went!

You are right...nothing to lose, but perhaps a anything, even if it's a better perspective on your injury, to gain!

One more thing to add, here: even if you get some news that you are not hoping for (which I hope doesn't happen!), they are always making gains in this area, so something that may help could be just around the corner!
