I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the McKie Thumb Splint? Jamie's therapist is going to fit her for it on Thursday 6-2 and I was wondering if it will bother her at all?

Amanda, I am TBPI but I did wera the thumb splint with the supination strap and it was GREAT! I thought it was very comfortable and it was WONDERFUL to have my right arm in a neutral position in stead of really turned in. It did not take much time to get used to at all! The material is soft too! Do be careful with the webbing between the thumb and index finger. Mine got broken down by this thumb splint and turned into a sore type deal. There is this stuff that you can get, Im drawing blank on the name, MOLESKIN thats it! It works great! YOu just put a piece on the brace where it rubs. You can get this stuff at Walmart for like $4 or $5 Hope this helps.

My 2 year old daughter has used this in the past (the thumb splint with the supinator strap) and she never minded having it on. Sometimes she would bring it to me to put it on because it allowed her arm/hand to be in a more neutral position therefore allowing her to accomplish certain tasks throughout the day with a bit more ease.

This appeared to be very comfortable for her as well. Do watch the webbing between the thumb and index finger as this could pose an irritation problem. You shouldn't keep the splint on all day though, so taking breaks from it will help with that, too.

I think the only complaint I had as the Mom was that Amber's hand would get sweaty and stinky in the thumb webbing sometimes if it was warm weather. Lots of hand washing and I threw the splint right in the washer and airdried it. Never had a problem with the washer with it.

Good luck.

My son is 2 now and has been wearing the thumb splint with the supinator strap for quite some time now. I think he started wearing it around 12 months of age. It did begin to break his whole thumb out and Ann at McKie splints made him a thumb splint out of another material. However, he has only had it for about 4months and it is showing wear. The original was made from neoprene and the new was I believe it is made from Breatheopene (somthing like that). The neoprene lasts forever but I am able to put either in the washing machine also. He has shown great improvement in supination and neutral. Hope you have great luck with it. Feel free to ask any questions about the splint or just anything. God Bless

Jamie's ortopediac doc ordered an ultrasound on her hips to check for dystocia and they found that her left hip socket is only about 50% formed. I thought maybe it was related to her BPI but thats on the right side. I was wondering if anyone else has a OBPI and hip dystocia?
