Deposit and motel questions

First question....If we're going to be lodging off site, do we still need to send the $100 deposit or is that just to reserve a room?
Next question(s)...Would it be best for us to stay in a motel closest to camp or would it be OK to stay closer to DC? We weren't sure if the traffic would be bad getting back and forth from motel to camp. Also, if anyone is familiar with the area could you please recommend some motels? Thank you!
