New Injury

Post by dwheat »

My wife suffered brachial plexis injury on Mar 30. She was treated at University of Utah. Right now she can only move a few of her fingers, no wrist, elbow or shoulder movement. This is all really overwhelming to us, and wondering what the future holds. Any suggestions or help will be appreciated. Also, we were told to apply for disability through Social Security. Anyone had to go through that? i only have a hundred questions, but I will leave it at this.
Thanks

Welcome to our crazy little club here, the one that no one wants to join as we say...... check out http://ubpn.org/medicalresources/us-bpi.html and get her to a BPI specialist asap. They are the best at dealing with the injury! Look for someone who deals with adults too, not children. I personally am in the process of SSD, there are people that have been awarded it , there are other who got denied. I got denied nad appealed it, went ot court, now I am just waiting for a ruling.

Help your wife do range of mtoion exercises to keep the joints moveable, thats inportant, if the freeze it can get painful.

Feel free to ask any questions!! We have all asked them at one point in time or another.......

I'm so sorry to hear about your wife's injury. It's great you found this website so soon. It was nearly 2 yrs before I found it. Keep reading on here, a lot of the messages from the past as well as current ones will give you lots of information.

About SS, I filed right away and they automatically turn it down. We sent in an appeal and it was almost 18 mos from the date of my accident before they approved it. It is retroactive to 6 mos past the date of injury. This year, when SS decided my disability needed to be re-certified, I found out that I got my disability because of the lung damage I sustained in the accident rather than my BPI. So I don't know if they will give it to you for the BPI alone of not. I wish you and your wife the best. Be very patient with her.

God bless you both!
