Hello, I have a question about my Daughters upcoming surgery. Do they give them an IV prior to surgery or do they wait until they are asleep from the drugs? Thanks and I look forward to your replies.

Re: About Surgery?
From my son's experience, they do not put the iv in until they have them asleep already. I can tell you that all hospitals are different but TCH puts it in after they are asleep and you don't have to hear them cry either. It is a frightening, very frightening experience, but it is made pretty easy by the professionals at TCH !!! Good luck and e-mail me if you need too

Re: About Surgery?
With my daughter they (TCH) were so wonderful with her. as I am sure they are with each child.. Kelsey was 8yr old (first surgery, Mod Quad) and they let her pick out what flavor of scent she wanted to use for her sleepy meds.. and they didn't put her IV's in until she was asleep. they made her experience with her surgery great! now she hates the smell of the bubble gum now??? ~LOL~
I do know if you let your child know you are scared it will play alot on how he/she will react..
I have had 2 children that have gone through surgery my oldest has gone there twice.. (not for brachial plexus/erb's palsey) for trigger thumbs!! and she was 21mo old her first and 23mo old her second.. I was young (21yr) and a panic case!! and she knew it.. and she reacted as I did.. I did know by the second surgery and for my daughter Kelsey that I had to save my panic and tears for when they were out of site.. (not to down anyone I know fear and worry is reacted different to us all.)but that is what I will share to maybe help you and your child.. Good luck and to let you and everyone with small babies know... My daughter Kelsey will be one year post surgery March 12th 2002 and she said if anyone was to ask her, she is glad to have had this surgery it has helped her with the use of her arm.. that had been the way it was for 8yrs!!
