My 17 yr old was recently put on topomax and she wants to die from the pain. She has migraines that never go away (two years and counting). I wonder why some people react better to this than others. When you first went on it did your headaches worsen?

I have been given Topomax after years of what I call experimentation on neurontin, depakote, notriptyline, you name it, I have been on it. I get migraines, 2-3x weekly if I am not on a preventative and I also have myofasial pain--no injuriesunless old sports relted crap counts. I am 36 and I have ben fighting migraines since I was14, 2 of my 3 boys are mow getting them as well--heredity is fun! My dad getsthema nd the only good thing is that as he ages they aren't as frequent or as severe. The depakote did the trick on the migraines, but since I am partial to the hair in my head, we switched to topomax. Although doc assured me that wasn't it, he switched me anyway. The nortriptilyne was for the back pain --I have a very localized area of pain in my upper back and neck-therefore they can't call it fibryomyalgia-and it wasn't cutting it anymore either. About once a year I have to go to something new. A couple of years ago he told me I am in a "chronic pain" situation" and all we could do was control as welll as possible. Needless to say this was very depressing. I teach, and over break I was hooping to find something to cut the pain a bit. I woke up this am and found that the topomax seems to be helping a bit this am. This is good, as I am gettig tempted over the years here to find alternative means of pain relief. LOL
I go back to work tomorrow, so I am crossing my fingers. I love whatI do-love my kids at home and at school, and I HATE not feeling like doing my job!
Just needed some support. After all these years of living with the pain, I though a group like this might help me. Am I in the right place?
thanks,

I am off of topomax and will not go back on it. My doc put me on it for my migrains. I would get one a week or so....but that medication is not for me. I had a very bad reaction to it. I could not sleep, still had headaches, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, dry mouth, severe mood swings, tingling in my feet, then when I got bumped up to 75mg severe burning in my joints and down my spine. My doctor took me off of it for 4 days now and I am not going to go back on it. There has to be somethng else out there for migrains without the bad side effects.Good luck to all of you and I hope you have better results. It is not for everyone, but does help a few. Thanks for your time. Penny

Does anyone have anything positive to say about Topomax. I have been taking it for about 2yrs and just recently had kidney stones. Taking it for seizures. I am allergic to a majority of other seizure meds. Anybody know of any other seizure meds besides Dilantin, Depakote, Tegretol???

hi, i too suffered from migraines all my life, starting in the 7th grade. they sort of waned during my 40's ,but then returned w/a vengenance in my early 40's. i was started on tompmax & got some relief, but the hated the side effects. let me tell you about the greatest thing i have ever found. it's called himalyan goji juice. i started taking in september 2005 & within 1 week could tell a HUGE difference. now i take nothing for preventative except for my wonderful goji juice. i might have 1 headache every 6-8 weeks & have since decided they are stress related. himaylan goji juice also helped me sleep better & have lots more energy. i was so zapped all the time due to all the topomax as well as the meds i would have to take when i did get a headache. this goji juice has been a miracle!!! i loved it so much i became a distributor, you can check out my website @
www.susanleeper@freelife.com . also while you are there check out:
www.gojihealthstories.com (for other testimonials)
www.gojiberry.com (tells the story of the himalyan goji berry) &
www.gojiresearch.com (tells about all the research that has gone into the goji berry) it is AMAZING stuff. i don't go anywhere without it! you can order from my website, either a bottle or a case or sign up to be a distributor yourself. not only is the product great, but you can make money too! i am a distributor mainly because i truly believe in the product! check it out! i would NEVER go back on meds again! thanks! susan
