To Matt's Dad,

You mentioned Dr. Laurent doing the exploratory work for Dr. Nath. Do you know if Dr. Nath has a neurosurgeon doing that now? I know that when my daughter had primary at TCH 5 yrs ago, that's how it happened, but I also know that Dr. Nath left TCH and went out on his own. I know I can ask Dr. Nath, but I figured if you knew it'd be good to share the info. in this forum anyway. It's not a big deal to me personally since my daughter is well past primary age, but I'm sure many other parents here would be interested to know.

Regarding Dr. Shenaq, I know he's still doing secondary surgeries, but I wonder if he's doing any nerve transfers and, if so, if there's another neurosurgeon involved there now.

Also, just curious, does anyone know if Dr. Waters uses a neurosurgeon? When we consulted w/him 5 yrs ago re: primary surgery, I don't recall him mentioning a neurosurgeon on the team, but we didn't actually get to the point of scheduling surgery there. At the time, we understood it that Dr. Waters would do the entire primary surgery himself, but I could be wrong.

I thought that Kozin and Waters did primary on their own. Nath does primary on his own. And Shenaq did adult primaries on his own and the peds part is still being restructured at TCH. A long time ago (at TCH) when primaries took longer than they do now they had different teams taking different pieces. This is how they were able to do multiple surgeries in one day. With my child, they had one person open up and explore, one person to the nerve grafting, one person harvest the nerve grafts from the leg and the residents would close. But now with the increase in technology, primaries take less time so I assume that there's not the same need for so many people to be involved.

Dr. Shenaq does not do primaries on his own. He is looking for a new neurosurgeon partner to do these surgeries with. Dr. Stevanovic in Los Angeles works with a neurosurgeon partner on primary. I don't know specifically about anyone else.

Tina,

Since Nath has moved to his own practice and Dr. Laurent had passed, I am not 100% sure who he uses. We still see him but Matt has been surgery-free since 2003 when Nath was still at TCH. I remember reading about Nath expanding his staff at his new practice, but don't know if they mentioned a neurosurgeon.

Waters has a ped. neurosurgeon listed on staff: http://children.photobooks.com/director ... service=51

Guest,

My son had primary at TCH as well in the same fashion as yours with multiple parts. Nath did the grafts, Laurent did the exploratory, and Dr. Nelson did the EMG work. That was in March of 2001.
I could be wrong but I thought that many primary surgeries had a neurosurgeon taking some part.

Does anyone know if Dr Nath uses an ortho for the bone surgery? I can't see from his site that he had any ortho training, and I know he used an ortho at TCH.

Dr. Nath does not use a neurosurgeon for primaries. He does them on his own. Dr. Shenaq is not doing primary repair at this time until another neurosurgeon is on board. He will refer to other facilities until that time. Team approach, it works!

Is Dr. Nath actually doing primary repairs (transfers, grafts, etc?) From all the reports on these boards, it seems nobody whose gone in for primary surgery has actually had any nerve repair done, it's all Mod Quad.

wondering

Bernie, Joe Joe had his primary with Dr. Laurent, graft with Dr. Nath and Dr. Nelson did his EMG in Feb. 2001...we just missed each other.

"Dr. Nath does not use a neurosurgeon for primaries. He does them on his own."

Interesting. When I called Dr. Nath's office a couple of months ago, I was assured he was working with a neurosurgeon, but his receptionist wouldn't tell me who it was.
