I called the best Western they are $69.00 a night with continental breakfest. No shuttle to anywhere except the medical center. How far is it from places like Mcdonalds or shopping places? Walking distances?

Best Western is directly in back of the Crowne plaza which is directly across the street from TCH.

There is a Pizza Hut and Burger King about one block away. There are restaurants in the other hotels (Marriott and Crowne) and there are the hospital food courts and cafeterias) There is a Mcdonalds right in the Abercrombie building at TCH. Within a short taxi ride- if you go just down Holcolme - there are a number of stores and restaurants. I would think it would cost about $3-5 to get there.

To cut costs - remember that you don't really need a hotel room while you are at TCH - parents can sleep on the double couch (although it's a squeeze) and you can go home right after being discharged. There are ways to cut lots of corners.

We stayed at the Best Western last May. We were pleased with the hotel in general, but even their shuttle service to the medical center wasn't very good. We walked a lot that week. It worked out fine for us, though, Andrew was 2 years old and he rode on his dad's shoulders a lot. It's pretty close to McDonalds, but it isn't really close to much else. We actually walked to the zoo and all over town, though. We did see the shuttle take one family to the IHOP resturant. We were never able to figure out how to make it work for us, though. We ate at the Crowne Plaza (just across the street) a couple of times and really enjoyed that.

Best of luck in your search.

Francine- We were told we have to stay one extra night after discharge because the splint will need to be checked. Is this unusual?

Francine, I just checked Crowne Plaza out again with a 21-day advance stay and it's coming up $69.50. I don't know why yours is $74.

Nicki, we're staying at the hotel for 2 nights, then checking out and staying at the hospital, then checking back in on his discharge date and leaving the next day. So 3 days at the hotel, 2 at the hospital. You can walk to everything. We walked all over the place. We took the umbrella stroller. Definitely email tami@ubpn.org to get reduced or free airfare.

(I'm away from home so I am posting as a guest.) Connie,

Was the Best Western really okay? How long does it take to walk to TCH? I found out that the shuttle doesn't leave until 7:00 am and we may need to be at TCH sooner. What was wrong with the shuttle service? Thanks for any input.

Has anyone else stayed there? Was it a good experience?

Nicki - this is what we always did...

our stays were always 2 nights... and I'm not telling you this to scare you but the reason for 2 nights was because Maia always a lot of pain and she was on morphine so we always stayed the extra night to get her through it.

She had surgery, then we had one night at hospital, then the next day she was given her splint, and then we stayed that night, and the next day her splint was rechecked to make sure it was ok, then we immediately went to the airport and came home so that she could be at home and in her own bed. She's always been SO happy on the airplane - couldn't wait to get home. I always brought pain meds for the airplane also.

Many children don't have pain like this so I don't want to worry you. Maia must just have a very low tolerance or be very sensitive.

Tammie - $74 for a king size bed. Maia is not used to sleeping on a regular bed -she sleeps on a futon at home on the floor so that if she fell it would only mean 4 inches. So I rather have a king size (she's in the middle) then a double with her on one end.

Well I stayed at both the Marriott and the crown. I have wrote this before but again I will write it cause I wish I would of known before.

Marriott:

The people werent very friendly the room was small the windows were small. there was not alot of play room for justice just felt closaphopic in that room the bathroom towels are rough. Plus to top it off they never gave us our wake up call and then never apologised for there mistake we never even got our appology until we called the 1800 number to complain. A women that didnt even work there said she was sorry for the way the marriott was. Plus the walk to tch seemed far. compared to the crown

Crown:

The employees are great. The room its self is totally at least 2 times bigger then the Marriott the windows are huge. Justice layed by the window for hours looking out at the beautiful view we had. She had lots of room to play. The restruant does everything possible to make there guests happy Justice wanted pancakes at 9pm and the cook made her a micky one. Plus after we recieved the food we decided it was time to get back to the room. the walk was wonderful it is closer to where we need to go for the appointments and surgery. west tower is right there. There are so many take out places and rest. you really dont need a fridge. plus for milk you can put Ice in the buget and keep your milk cold. I think the Marriott is just so popular cause the name and all over all the Crown was the best hotel for my family and all the luggage we had
