My son was 10lbs 9oz and I delivered vaginally. My delivery went well. This is my second child though, my first was 10lbs both boys. I had not yet heard of a girl at that weight. Was this your first child? Was your delivery ok?

Hi Shelley,
I'm in St. Clair shores so very near to Warren. I am having a really hard time finding an PT/OT that takes Medicaid. I don't have medicaid currently but want to see if the Children's Specials Health Insurance something or other can pick up as a secondary insurance and they say it has to be one that takes medicaid...know of anyone in my area?

This is my 3rd child. The first two were both just under 7 lbs...this big girl was a complete surprise. The delivery went awesome until she got stuck.

Indiana doctor

Post by admin »

Reading this made me tear up b/c even though my son is 5, I remember those first few days all too well. First let me say how hard it was to get to the point that I am now, as it will be for you. I have learned a lot from this website and have felt a sense of relief knowing that I can come here for support if necessary.

I live in Wabash, IN, which is about 45 miles west (and a little south) of Fort Wayne. We go to Riley Children's hospital and see Dr. Alexander Mih from the Indiana Hand Center (he comes to Riley every other Friday afternoon for appointments). He has been doing BPI consult and surgeries there for about 12 years now and is absolutely wonderful. One of our friends did his residency with Dr. Mih, that is how we happened to find out about him. If you need information concerning a doctor, please e-mail me and I will share his information.

My son was born with both right BPI and phenic nerve palsy (the phrenic nerve makes the diaphragm move), so not only did he have extensive arm damage, but also was on oxygen, since he had the use of only one lung. He started therapy, both PT and OT, at 6 weeks old, and still continues it today at 5 1/2.

Each state has some type of early intervention program for children with disabilities through their Family and Social Services Adminstration. In Indiana it is called "First Steps". The number there is (800) 441-STEP. If you call, they may be able to get you in touch with the correct agency in Michigan.

I urge you to first find a doctor who can specialize in BPI and then find out out Michigan's early intervention program. In the very early stages, I knew I needed to "do something", I just wasn't sure what. These two things alone will make a HUGE difference.

If you do chose Riley, I can give you information about that. They have the Ronald McDonald House for parents who live far away or have children who must be hospitalized to stay for free. There is also the Courtyard by Marriott right downtown that has "Riley Rates" for people as well. They are really sweet. When Gage had his first surgery, the staff actually pitched in and gave him a good luck gift basket the morning of!

Keep faith that all will be well and don't lose sight of the fact that you have the most precious child of all! You will be tried, but you will make it. We love and pray for you. Let me know how I can help.

Diane, please go to this web site for a HEALTHY kids program relating to MICHIGAN (I didn't read all it offers).
http://www.michigan.gov/mdch/0,1607,7-1 ... --,00.html

Each state varies......some help pay insurance premiums, some help pay what insurance won't cover, some pay the balance after insurance pays. If you do not have any insurance....some have a program, special to cover kids.

Also try going to your local PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT and inquire if they have on early intervention program for your child born with a disability.....or delays.

Also you could inquire at your local SCHOOL system to direct you to an early intervention program. I would try the Public Health Dept. first.

In ILLINOIS most counties have a SPECIAL SERVICES UNIT, relating to a childs SCHOOL special needs. These Offices are not part of the School building itself......but a completely seperate agency, in a completely seperate building. The one for my County, is located in the City of the COUNTY SEAT, and serves ALL schools in the county. The school SPECIAL SERVICES UNIT, frequently does EARLY evaluation's. Each of my Children had these evaluations, and they were sponsored by the County PUBLIC HEALTH DEPT.
PLEASE note: I live in a small, rural county, so if you are in a large metropolotin area, you possibly have more than one per county.

Kate,

by not letting the arm dangle, I didn't mean pinning, we were told never
to do that - just to support it when picking her up or prop a little blankie underneath it in her carseat or when she was lying flat. These were recommendations from our OT.

Just wanted to clarify that I do not support and would never advocate pinning.

Shriners Hospital, Chicago
http://www.shrinershq.org/shc/chicago/welcome.html
The Chicago Shriners Hospital provides expert, family-centered medical care for children needing orthopaedic, plastic and reconstructive surgery and spinal cord injury care.

The hospital primarily serves children from Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan. However, referrals are accepted from outside these areas due to the hospital's surgical specialties and rehabilitation expertise. The average patient stay is 5-1/2 days.

Diane, I meant to post this link earlier, but I wasn't able to bring up the website for some reason (it's regarding the craniosacral therapist).

http://www.upledger.com/home.htm (click on "Find a Practitioner" on the right)

I was surprised that you asked about CST. The topic has been discussed here, but I think that most people here don't have any experience with it. How did you know about this form of therapy if you don't mind me asking?

Just realized I never replied to this and now Tess is 7 weeks old. LOL

I know about Cranio Sacral Therapy because my son had craniosynostosis....see his webpage at:
