Guest, it took me a long time to be able to watch my daughter's birth tape. I remember basically crying so hard as I watched it the first time because it hurt so much to see and I know that she was just fine before she was born and then to watch what they did to her - made me basically sick!!! I literally screamed STOP!!! while I watched the tape - it hurt me so much to know that I was watching how they hurt my little new born baby...... But - in the long run, 13 years later, I am glad that we have that tape. We can show her someday what went on, it was great evidence during our trial, and most importantly - I feel that she deserves to know her own story about her birth. That was something that had always bothered me when she was so little - I just wasn't sure exactly what had happened. We don't watch that tape of her birth - we did during her trial - but someday when I feel ready to hand that tape over to her to see - she will see what happened exactly and I do feel that she has the right to know.

Christy,

That IS really funny! Yes, my husband and I are native Chicagoans (suburbs, anyway) and have been in Texas for almost 8 years.
You're right - Dallas is about 5 hours from Houston. Next time we venture down to Houston for Danny's appt. with Dr. Nath, maybe I'll give you a ring! (And I promise I won't tape you!)

I, for one, think videotaping of births and surgeries should be MANDATORY! Perhaps if the doctors knew they were being recorded, they would be more careful and concerned about their actions.

Personally, I did not want a video of my birth because I'm a private person and the queasy sort and I wouldn't want to watch it or show it to anyone else, BUT considering what happened, I wish I DID tape it and would encourage all birthing moms to tape the birth, and if the birth occurs without complications (and they are queasy or private like me), they can always erase the tape afterwards, but they will have it in the event it becomes necessary to document what happened.

I believe too much happens in favor of doctors "protecting their butts". Just like the database that tracks each doctor's "record" of malpractice or negligence - this database is not accessible to the public, only the medical profession! The patient's should have more rights and be informed when selecting their doctors. It's crazy that more measures are being implemented to protect the doctors and not the patients!

Michelle,

I could not agree more!!!

I also like your idea and point that we could simply erase the tape if things went well.

It is sooooo crazy and so sad that more measures (or all of the measures) are being implemented to protect the doctors and not the patients. Unfortunately we have not organized enough, created a strong voice and demanded measures to increase patient safety in obstetrical practices and physician/midwife accountability. I was recently at a conference and I was talking to a few birthing professionals, who also reveiwed my personal birth video. They all agreed and expressed...."you guys with injured babies need to stand on top of the world and start SCREAMING about what has happened to your babies". You know what, they are right!!! We have been MUCH too quiet!

So let's hope we can start to make some changes in that area, and let's hope that people realize just how important it will be to meet with our Senators and Congressmen in D.C., and start to tell our stories! The UBPN camp in September will be an amazing and unique opportunity to truly start this process. I sure hope some of you will make it and realize just how important it is.
