Patty,
I think the plate shouldn't affect the growth of the arm, because growth takes place at the growth plates - near each end of the long bones. I'm no doctor, though... this is a good question for his surgeon. I'm sure they have enough experience with this situation to give you a good solid answer.

Forearm osteotomy
Re: Forearm osteotomy
Karrie,
Dr. Davino did Rain's surgery. She is wearing a cast although it is not made like the typical fiberglass cast. This material is better according to Dr.Davino because it allows for the cast to expand since the arm will slightly swell post surgery. Fiberglass casts have no give. It is not quite as hard as the traditional cast but still offers no give when pressure is applied. Rain also has a pin in that will be removed when the cast comes off. The pin will be taken out in office unless she starts freaking out so badly that the doctor cannot remove it. If that is the case then they will take her to the hospital and remove it after placing her under anesthesia. I'm hoping that that won't be the case but, at least that option is available if we need it.

DeShawn,
Can I ask what was the specific reason for the osteotomy and what other surgeries did Rain have? It sounds like that is the same procedure that was explained to me for Kyle. Thanks.

Re: Forearm osteotomy
Karrie,
Rain was in a totally supinated position. She was unable to pronate since she has no movement from the wrist down. The doctors wanted to place her in a functional position so that when her fingers begin to move she will at least be in a neutral positon. She is having the Gracillis Transfer next year and they needed her in a functioning position before that takes place. So far Rain has had 5 surgeries. She had primary at 8 weeks old, she had a Contralateral C-7 nerve transfer at 8 months old, she had Mod Quad at 13 months old, she had wrist capsuledesis this past April, and the Osteotomy this month. Dr. Davino explained that the Osteotomy will not affect her ability to move. It will not give her increased function it simply placed her in a functioning position. So far so good with her. It's great to see her hand not palm out. I think it was a great decision.

Re: Forearm osteotomy
Some doctors go in after the bone has healed to remove the plate & screws inside.
