My son Zac is a TBPI. He was 4-wheeling, swerved to avoid a van, and hit it with his shoulder. Were it not for his helmet he wouldn't be here today. This happened 10/20/02. Has anyone worked with Dr Gaebler, Dr. Grant, or Dr. Greyhack out of Children's Memorial in Chicago? We are playing the waiting game, and I'm a bit nervous because our window of surgery is closing. My son can use his wrist and hand (left), but cannot use his bicepts, deltoid. From what I have been reading, I should be thankful for that. He is currently using a TES for stimulation, and we pray that that will be sucessful. This is a really great site. Thanks!

Hi Sandy,
Zac's injury sounds very similiar to mine. I didn't get any recovery at 4 months out, so I opted for surgery. I received surgery at 6 months out. It is now 18 months out and I am seeing some recovery. I can lift my arm with my biceps now and my deltoid is flickering. I'm hoping it will be somewhat useable with continued therapy.
From what I've been told, if you don't see any recovery by 4 months, you are a candidate for surgery. Good luck!

Hi everyone! Right TBPI obtained when I was attacked by a mad bull elephant while rescuing a little orphan girl from a collapsed burning house that was being shelled by drug-crazed Angolan gun-runners. Not.
Blind Ford Escort driver drove into me bike.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

glad I made you larf. Well spotted... I am a Brit, and we met at Lizzy's. Looking forward to the next one. e-mail on it's way to you once I've finished printing it out, put it in an envelope, bought a stamp, and shoved it back into that little slot in the front of my computer. You know, the one next to the retractable coffee cup holder.

Ilsphid. East coast. Shy. And compared to a lot of the people here, I have a very mild BPI.

(I think. The doctors never tell ya enough. I have full motion, just a lot of pain and some stinging and numbness from a "brachial plexus lesion involving the posterior and medial cords of the plexus", as the doctors put it. Probably neurologic TOS is my guess, but I hurt myself - honest to god - laying on the couch watching Mulan. such is my luck.)

Hi, I am from Vineland, NJ and I have a R-TBPI due to an exercise machine collapse. I am not on here as much as last year due to my mother's illness, but i do visit from time to time. Rhoda
