ROLL CALL ( LURKERS TOO!!!!!!! )
Re: ROLL CALL ( LURKERS TOO!!!!!!! )
Hi Frank.......EMG.......let's see. Can't remember the correct name for it, but basically it's a test to listen to muscle activity. The test given to me not only recorded sound but also recorded wave activity on a screen that looked like an occilliscope (sp?). Thin electrodes were inserted into different muscles in my arm and shoulder area, and the doc would ask me to move my arm or hand (depending on where the electrodes were) so he could detect if certain muscles were working. If he got a silent reading then he knew that the nerve feeding that muscle was not functioning. It was very clear when muscles were working or not. The muscles that were functioning gave off a loud scratching sound on the monitor. Those that were not working were noticeably quiet.
From what I understand, these tests are given pretty early into the injury, and usually at least two or three times at different intervals to determine if any recovery is happening. It was uncomfortable, but because my sensory nerves in my arm were screwed up I couldn't feel the needles. When he stuck my shoulder though....well....it was more than uncomfortable. Hope this helps.

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Just hoisting the roll caall back up top again!
As some of you know, some of us are working on a tbpi website as there is NOTHING on the internet like this anywhere. We already have quite a lot done. But we are all long term injured and it's easy to forget what info would have been helpful to us when we were newly injured. So it would be great if ANY of you could let either me or Liz know (you can reach us via email by clicking on either of our names-the website address is also in our profiles under 'homepage'...it's still very much in production but we are getting there!)ANYTHING that you would like to see included, or if you want to submit anything or just share an idea or a link we'd love to hear from you. Be happy peeps:0)
