Hi Ellen,
John's regain of function after such a severe injury is absolutely amazing, and a real credit to his determination, and the Mayo surgeons' skills and knowledge of this injury. Top that with the support of his family and friends, and he has the best chance to overcome this injury. He also has youth on his side, which can also make a huge difference in the success of this kind of surgery. (Any surgery really)
I hope he continues to improve, and fulfill his dreams...I'm sure he will!! You made a good point about how difficult and time consuming the surgery was; also, anyone who does consider this procedure should always bear in mind that often, the individual circumstances are not always right for it. Patients are very carefully selected for the best outcome.
Anyway, good luck to you all...please keep us up to speed with progress! It's so great to get good news for a change!! :0)
