Re: Mod Quad
Layne...my son Nicholas usually wears a size 3T or 4T but while in his splint he is wearing his older sisters shirts (not the pink ones though) which are sizes 6 through 10 depending on arm hole size. He doesn't wear a shirt unless we leave the house but if your son is a drooler he might need to wear shirts all the time. So far I have only bought one shirt and it ended up being too small..LOL...oh well hopefully the next 7 week will go fast!

Re: Mod Quad
I brought t-Shirts 2 sizes bigger. I also ended up buying a shirt in the hospital her her. She wore that one home. Once we were home Gabrielle went around most of the time without a shirt at all. She liked it that way in the warm weather.

Re: Mod Quad
just wanted to let you know that mod quad splint is arm up... for capsulodesis there is a different splint - arm out to side.
the splints that have arm out to the side have this brace piece. The piece is what causes the needed for a much larger shirt.... but the mod quad splint is smaller, doesn't have this piece and 1-2 sizes larger should work fine
you can see the pictures of all of Maia's splints on this page - so you can compare...

I'd also like to reply and say that you should get a couple of the Coolmax shirts that Francine mentioned earlier. Our son had a bad rash from the steri strips and rubbing of the foam. Just put the tee shirt on UNDER the splint. Before we put the shirt on under the splint, I could even get his regular shirts on over it. So 1-2 sizes bigger will be fine if you put it over the splint.

Francine,
Aaron just had the MQ done in December and he was splinted at around 110 degrees almost straight out to the side and with his palm facing up. I heard they are trying this now cause alot of the kids are having a hard time coming down.

Re: Mod Quad
we used to use cotton t-shirts under the splint and it was the dermatology department that warned me to use the Cool Max so that it wicked the moisture away...and it's hot here now and Maia's is sweating like a pig and it's working great...her skin underneath is really great.
ALSO..... here's a tip to bathing underneath the splint...
lay them down... unstrap the side straps (only) and you can wash underneath the splint.... Maia must have been really swollen when they made her splint... there's so much room under there - I can basically wash her whole chest and back... they get skinnier when they are laying down so it's easy that way.

Re: Mod Quad
I am definately going to look into the Coolmax shirts for after Ian has the surgery. It was 112 degrees here yesterday. It is only going to get hotter. I did not sign my girls up for any activities this summer because I was not sure when we would be in Texas, so I think we will just stay in the cool house and watch movies all summer. LOL They will hate it, but it sounds like heaven to me! Maybe I will just let Ian go shirtless most of the time. He is so skinny that I do not think I will have to buy shirts that are TOO big, one or two sizes will do; that is what I did after he had primary in Jan. I have researched the splints and looked at them over and over. I made sure this time to show my girls what Ian will look like afterwards and how his arm will be, last time when he was in the immobilizer after the nerve grafts, my oldest daughter thought that they had cut his arm off because it was under his shirt and she could not see it. It was kind of sad, so I have made sure to explain EVERYTHING I can think of to them this time. LOL I just told them that we will have our own little Statue of Liberty for the 4th of July. Maybe we could make him a torch or something.... Thanks for the advice, boy the time is flying by, I guess that is good, it gives me less time to freak out. Thank you all for helping me educate myself and my family.

Re: Mod Quad
Layne, I would suggest getting the Coolmax shirts before the surgery and taking them to TX with you so that you can put it on him before they put the splint on. The only place I could find small (child size) Coolmax shirts is from the site Francine posted. I got an extra small women's from LL Bean to put on under his splint until the others arrive. BTW, they only had long sleeves so I'm going to hem them to make them short. So I'm just saying you probably should order them now so that they will be ready when you need them. Good luck.

Re: Mod Quad
keep the one sleeve long though...cut the other one off...
I've got to tell you that Miss Maia the Eczema Queen is doing GREAT skinwise! The only part of her hand that is having problems are her fingers...not in the coolmax and wrapped with the finger part of the straps. I have to put cortisone cream on there and keep her fingers in gauze so that it doesn't touch the hand strap. Tonight I'm going to see if I can wrap that piece with coolmax too...
The stuff is amazing! http://www.patagonia.com
it's the only place I have found with a kid size coolmax (on the web at least) (it's called Capilene there)
