I too must agree with all those who say get the second opinion. Especially if it is from the Mayo, you will get more than just a second opinion. I went to the Mayo in early Feb. of this year fully expecting surgery, most likely a nerve transfer. It was 5 1/2 months post accident when I went and I had been seeing some definate spontaneous recovery. They scheduled me for x-rays, EMG, and nerve conduction. I spent the better part of a day being tested, not a 20 minute evaluation. After my x-rays I met with the hand doctor. He felt they may suggest a nerve transfer, from my tricep to my deltoid. He said it was a very good possibility. Well, after my other tests I met with all the doctors and they felt I would continue to heal without surgery. They were very impressed with how things had been healing and felt surgery wasn't necessary at this time. About 3 days later, out of no where, I was unbelievably able to lift my arm twice as high as I could before, and I am still continuing to see some more improvement albeit very slowly. My point is, I was sure I was going to have surgery but they saw and knew that I would be better off at this time without it. They will only do the surgery if they truly feel it will benefit you. Their opinion is very valuable so please consider it, you will not be sorry. JJ

Please get a second opinion. My daughter was hurt in a car accident at age 4. We live in Phoenix, AZ and the best neurosurgeon in the state told us, wait, she will get all movement back in 6 months. We did not heed his advice and went to Dr Nath. We learned she had two avulsions and 4 stretch injuries.
My daughter is now 13 years old. I know how hard it is to go thru all of this. Good luck to you.

Mayo is the best place in the US for TBPI injuries. I have spent nine years reading pros and cons on many message boards. Mayo is the best of the best and there is three brains working together versus one.

I live every day with the knowledge my arm never saw a specialist. I know in my heart if I would have seen one specialist I would have more movement today... My arm did recover some movement on its own but it is no where near what it could have been.

I was hurt in a car accident and thus was in the never ending loop of "We are not paying for that." My accident wiped me out financially thus I could not afford to go and by the time I found the resources to go it was too late...

If you are having financial complications then let me know because Mayo Clinic has programs to help financially pay for the visit. Please take your daughter there because as Christopher said this is her future.

Hello, My name is TK and yes my son was hit by a truck when he was three and with a babysitter and dragged some which is how his TBPI occurred, Masen is now six years old and the doctors Shin, Bishop and Spinner at the Mayo are Miracle workers and I would not have anyone else touch my child. He avulsed nerves, so they took nerves out of his legs and used them to graft a part of his C7 nerve on the left side to his Deltoid muscle and a part of his shoulder shrugging nerve on the right side down to his elbow, Masen will never have full use of his right arm but it will have some function thanks to those doctors. He continues to see them every 6mo for emg's and evaluation. I highly recommend the Mayo clinic, Masen may have nothing going on in his arm if it was not for them. you can always email me at tamluc5@yahoo.com
