Gayle and kklmommmy:
apparently, I had too much Girl Scout Thin Mint ice cream!
I worried for a long time about meeting up with my doctor-at the hospital or around town. What would I say? What would he say? Would I just want to punch him?
Juliana is now 7. We won our lawsuit. Not exactly a slam dunk, but he lied in the depo and was caught time after time. Even his lawyers were pissed at him. I'm not sure i would not have sued, but I know that I would have felt better about myself sooner if he had taken responsibility for what happened. And "I'm sorry" does that. I was burdened by guilt for so long; his apology would have gone a long way towards relieving that guilt.
As for a doctor or midwife going to their insurance company and telling them to pay... NOT HAPPENING. Forget about the legal ramifications...even if the practitioner wants to do the right thing, insurance companies never do!!
I also think the nurses should know that the delivery was traumatic. I was treated like anyone else, but that delivery was not like everyone else's. It would have been helpful to have a nurse mention that she knew it had been tough and that there were people at the hospital (social workers) who can help. I probably would not have taken them up on it, but it would have been thoughtful.
