Okie dokie, I said I would post Dr. Shenaq's reply, and this is it:
"In general, I have no problem with children hanging from monkey bars or any activity that requires hanging. Obviously in cases where hand strength is an issue, precautions need to be taken. Also if a child has recently undergone surgery then I do request that there be no hanging for approximately 6 weeks, however after that 6 week postoperative period they can resume this activity. It is a good strengthening exercise especially on older children who are more aware of the need for muscle strengthening. It is also good for muscle stretching and possibly minimizing further muscle contractures in the axilla.
As with any kind of therapy, it is looked at on a case by case basis, based on the child's surgical history, muscle strengths, and weaknesses .
So, folks, there you go!
Let us also remember that some of our children are older and we all know that things change. The ACR didn't even exist when Juliana had the mq. Time marches on, and the doctor's protocols change.
good luck,
claudia
