Blimey Court, what a terrific response! At least it looks like these people do actually read the letters sent to them.

Re: Help find a cure for BPI, Paralysis, and More!
Just trying to keep attention to this...
here's one of the responses I got.
Dear M. Janney:
Thank you for writing to me about stem cell
research. I appreciate hearing from you on this critically
important issue and welcome the opportunity to respond.
I hope this letter finds you optimistic because we will
prevail in stem cell research.
At the dawn of this new era in medicine, I believe
it is important to support medical research that offers
hope for those living with crippling diseases, including
Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes, cancer and multiple
sclerosis. While I oppose human reproductive cloning, I
strongly support stem cell research and somatic cell
nuclear transplantation research, which has the potential
for medical innovation and new medical treatments.
To this end, on February 28, Arlen Specter (R-PA)
and I, along with Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Tom
Harkin (D-IA), Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Gordon
Smith (R-OR) introduced the "Stem Cell Research
Enhancement Act of 2005" (S. 471). This bill would
amend the Public Health Service Act to provide for
human embryonic stem cell research, regardless of the
date on which the stem cells were derived from a human
embryo. This legislation is currently under consideration
in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions
Committee. As you may know, an identical bill passed
in the House of Representatives on May 24, 2005 by a
vote of 238 to 194.
Additionally, I have introduced, along with
Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and 28 bipartisan
cosponsors, the "Human Cloning Ban Act of 2005" (S.
1520). This bill would prohibit conducting or attempting
to conduct human reproductive cloning. Furthermore, it
would establish strict civil and criminal penalties for any
violation of such ban. This legislation is currently under
consideration in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Once again, thank you for writing to share your
support for stem cell research. I value your
correspondence and hope that you will continue to keep
in touch. If you have any additional questions or
comments, please feel free to call my Washington, D.C.
staff at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.
Sincerely,
?
