Sorry to hear of your husband's incident. I'm a former NY residing in Fla. My daughter needed surgery for nerve repair for C5/6 and scar tissue removal. We used Dr. Grossman and we are happy to recommend him. He has an office both in NY & FL. His website is:
http://www.handandnervespecialist.com/
and is toll-free number to his Fla office is:

800-668-2778. contact the office and you may fax his medical records for a free evaluation and/or find out when the dr will be in NY or if he has a partner. His patients are both adults and children. Best of luck to a speedy recovery.

Dr. Scott Wolffe is no longer with Yale. That is one of the reasons we didn't have our surgery there. We felt he was a critical member of their BP team since their track record was based on his participation.

Hi Nancy,

I too am a mother of a grown son with a tramatic brachial plexus injury. My son was injured almost 9 years ago now with it involving the same nerves as your son Eric. We were lucky and got to Dr. Kline rather quickly. He had his first surgery within 4 months of the accident, nothing really seemed to be improved however because of the extent of the injury. He had another surgery last June as Dr. Kline has learned a lot more about treating the injury since Jeff's accident 9 years ago. My biggest concern is his pain. He goes yearly to see Dr. Kline and has taken anti seisure medications, but the side affects are terrible.
Does anyone out there have something to help ease the pain. I truly believe we have all finally accepted his injury, but when I see him dealing with that pain as a mother it bothers me. He went back to college and got a job working on a computer so he has somewhat gotten his life back in order except the pain seems to keep him from fully becoming what he was before.

Hi,

Nice to "meet" you. Thanks for responding. My biggest concern is also the pain. I really don't even know where to begin except to say that when all is said and done the pain is the worst. I can't even print here what Eric would say about the pain. And, believe me, I have heard it all. As his mother (and his father would also agree) seeing his pain is absolutely the worst thing for a parent. Our hearts break every time we see him struggling with it on a bad day. It brings me to tears to even think about it now. Good days are a real blessing and thankfully he gets those too. I know though that even the good days are not pain free, just more bearable or maybe not as crippling. Eric has done a really great job of trying to get back to normal. He attends college full time and works part time. These things really help him not focus on his pain. He is trying to lead the normal life of a 21 year old college kid the best he can. I visit this message board every day. It has helped me tremendously to learn about what it is like to have this injury. It has given me more information than I've gotten from any of the numerous doctors, pain specialists, biofeedback, accupuncturists, etc., etc. could ever hope to know. I share information with Eric when the opportunity to do so comes up and when I think he's receptive to it. I have not yet been able to convince him to share his experiences on the board. I think it's because he's trying so hard to not dwell on his injury and it's still too painful emotionally. By the way, if anyone on this message board can help a parent learn how to deal with the occasional very emotional breakdowns that occur, please let me know. They don't happen as frequently as before but they still come up and when they do I know it's because he's reached his breaking point. I just don't know what to do when they happen. I'd like to be able to say the right things and be as supportive as I can be. Thanks for being here!

Hi Again Nancy and all the rest on this board,

We are 9 years into the injury in May. I mentioned this message board to him, but he wasn't interested. I suspect if he checks it out he would never respond. My son is now 31. He was just 22 years old when it happened. I don't see him everyday anymore like when the injury first occurred so I guess I can put it out of my mind some, but when he is around me and I see him cringing in pain and clinching his fists I have a hard time dealing with it. For the most part people can't tell Jeff has the injury because he usually has his left hand in his pocket. As it has been 9 years he has gone through depressions, self medications, which the law frowns on which in turn causes more depressions. I find myself as a mother being very over protective of him. Discovering this entire site has been great. We were told of course that this injury is very rare and that most people die or are totally paralysed who have this type of injury so just to read about other people facing the exact same thing as him has been very beneficial. I'm going to work on him to post his name on the online directory as I found people not too far from us with the injury. I think if Jeff would be more outgoing about his injury he could be very helpful to other young people just facing the injury but even after 9 years he still likes to hide it.

Just wanted to take a moment and thank all of you. Through Lisa's extensive research and much help from the UBPN we've finally gotten to the right doctor's we believe. Went to Dr. Belzberg in Baltimore and to Dr.De Lot Biniere' in Conn. for a second opinion. Both great Doctors with the end result we've decided to stay with Dr. Belzberg. I'm scheduled for the second EMG Apr.1st then a follow up w/Dr.Belzberg on the 17th.
Hopefully the test shows regrowth of the nerves and hopefully no surgery!
