Sensory/Therapy Idea
Sensory/Therapy Idea
Nicole's OT did something that I thought was a pretty neat idea the other day so I wanted to share it with you all. She put a few small and lightweight wooden shapes into a small canvas bag. Then, she had Nicole reach into the bag with her L (BP) hand and pick out a shape. Nicole was familiar with what the pieces were b/c they'd already played with them a bit. Anyway, she successfully pulled out 2 shapes!! I don't see how she could've done that w/o being able to feel them at least to some extent. It was also pretty impressive b/c she doesn't have much finger extension (combined with a limited grasp) and usually the only way she gets things into her L hand is by placing them in there with her R hand. The whole thing was such a simple concept, but I'd never even thought of doing that. The pieces were very small and lightweight too which is good since Nicole doesn't have the strength to hold anything large or heavy in her L hand yet. Well, I hope this simple concept can help some of you. -Tina )
Re: Sensory/Therapy Idea
Hi Tina,
My therapist did something similar but to add even more sensory stimulation, she filled the bag with uncooked rice and then put in the blocks, so that you have to root around and find those little blocks and differentiate the distinctions. And there is something pleasing about feeling the rice slip through your fingers, kind of like sand at the beach.

How cool! What a great idea! Thanks, Nancy! I like the analogy too. -T
Re: Sensory/Therapy Idea
tina - this reminds me of the touch box that I used for Adena at one of her birthday parties... (lol)
I took a big box to cover the child's hand and inside the box I had something in there that they had to touch and tell what it was.... well I had all sorts of things... (gross things that didn't please them too!!) It was a lot of fun. I wouldn't consider this version a therapy thing but just wanted to share this memory with you. They were very upset to know I had wet catfood in one box!! UGH!!

Re: Sensory/Therapy Idea
That is a great idea...we often do something similar with money and eyes closed....pick out a penny, nickel quarter, etc....It's amazing how hard it is to pick between a quarter and nickel. The quarter has ridges but if you can't feel them it can be hard. As all teenagers Jameson wants to keep the money when we're done!! LOL
