Hi Marilyn,
From reading your posts on the General Board, I wondered if your Big Jav's injury was similar to my Jill's, severe LOBPI now age 21. Now, after reading this post it sounds similar. My Jill never had surgery. At that time because several doctors all told me she was SO SEVERE, and that you had to have something to work with for surgery, and she had NOTHING.
I imagine you have been reading along and already know I only pop in over the summer months, finding UBPN the summer of 2003. You have probably already read the one I bring back up each Summer http://ubpn.org/messageboard/thread ... msRange=15
Also, you might check out my post at http://ubpn.org/messageboard/thread ... hread=6351
It wasn't until I got on this site that I realized that my Jill was in the minority.....Supinated, and not able to Pronate. Since Jill's injury is also of her left Torso, she holds her left shoulder higher.....the reason for this is because the stronger right torso muscles are pulling her over, thus raising her left shoulder, since her left torso muscles can't counter act the pull. So WATCH for this, and the PT can give you help with that.
I think much of the above will answer many of your questions.....but if not ask away. My Jill is busy with college & her long time boyfriend....and does not consider her OBPI an issue for discussion. I did get her to go with me to the Annual Chicago BPI picnic in 2003 to see Dr. Nath, but that is that for now, regarding BPI as far as she is concerned.
Good Luck with you move....So much work! Angela

Re: no function at all - ever
hey
not been on this for a while n jst read this post! wen i was born my arm didnt move at all and didnt for jst over a year and a half. i had NO surgery and NO intervention wot so ever. doctors told my mum i had a weak arm and would heal in 3 months (ye that old chestnut again!!!).
My mum kinda tortured me tho...i loved tape boxes so she used to TIE my left(unaffected arm) to my body wit a tie or belt etc and leave my right arm (affected arm) n i eventually built up the strength to reach the box, then lift and then hav the presicion to slot it into a box holder (quite fine movement). so thru play...and holdin back the good arm my mum helped me gain that! and now i alright movement back in my arm. the underside of it is numb tho. its jst a strip like where a vien runs down my arm that is numb.
Jst thot id post that and jst let you no that theres time for your son to gain movement and us bpi kids are pretty damn tough, wot he cant do wit his erb arm, he will adapt to do in some unique way, and thats wot makes us such fantastic ppl! << i think so anyway lol.
This injury makes us stronger ppl and im pretty sure most bpis will agree. i find im more accepting to others 2!
Hope this helps in some way or another!

Angela - Javier's torso is affected also. Higher shoulder, curved back. We went to Kozin today and will be setting up therapy next week. I will definately ask about exercises for this. Thanks for all of your posts. They are always full of info and inspiration.

Michele- I agree. Javier has been a tuffie since the minute he came home. I hope he stays that way.
