Trampolines?

Post by cherie_hohertz »

We took Sarah over to a friend's house the other night and they have a trampoline with an enclosure. She had the time of her life! Of course, I was sitting on the edge trying to make sure she didn't hurt herself, but that's another topic altogether.

I'm wondering if any of you have thoughts on trampolines for our kids? Is this just one of those activities that they should stay away from, or am I being the overly protective mothers?

Thanks.

Javier is only one, but loves to hop up and down. I am wondering too if our kids should use trampolines. I would like to gt one for our older son, but will not if Javier can't use it when he is older. Just another case of the sib;ings having to give up on stuff too.

Waiting for answers with you

For some reason I can't log in.

Anyway, we have a huge trampoline in our yard. Our daughter, Tara (LOBPI) who is 3 always has a blast! However, she is always supervised and we are always right there - not even for a second do we walk away (With or without the net enclosures)

We have lots of docs in our family and trampolines cause injuries everyday to kids who didn't have problems to begin with. With all trampolines just be careful and BE overprotective. We don't let big kids jump with the little kids either. Our rules are based on the safety of all users not on our daughter's BPI. Make your rules and stick to them - with no exceptions. Talk to your kids about the dangers of jumping and falling - it is a semi soft surface but you can still bite your tongue or twist and ankle, etc.

At therapy they have a little single trampoline. Tara gets to jump on that but only while holding onto someone's hand with her BPI arm. Even with this one being small and padded we still supervise very closely and never look away.

I hope this helps you in some way. I don't think you are being over protective when it comes to this topic. Always use your mom sense - according to my grandma - and things should be okay.

Brenda (mom to Tara Grace, LOBPI)

I think when I discourage my child from doing things because they "might" get hurt I am setting their life up in expectancy that their arm is holding them back and they are different from others. That is just my opinion.

Ryan's dad --- what did your doctor tell you? Why is it bad, my kid has been jumping on one for years! Oh NO!

Cherie,

I'm with you. I'm not wild about trampolines. But I sort of feel like that's a non-issue, because no one I know has one.

Here's the bigger deal for me, as far as Danny's safety goes ... those bounce houses that all the parents (but me!) seem to rent for birthday parties. They're ubiquitous. I let Danny jump in them, very minimally. But I am always right there, watching the OTHER KIDS like a hawk, as they scare me more than the apparatus!

Sarah is so little, too. I didn't let ANY of my kids do trampolines at her age, if that makes you feel any better! I think you are being wisely cautious and not overly protective.

Guest... My Doctor's biggest concern was the trampoline without the side... but he still advise us against all of them. I think because when one child is going down while another is coming up it can creates alot of upswing force and if the child is offbalance he/she can fall and hurt there shoulder. Did that make sence??? Wayne

We have had one for years also and never have had a problem. Prior to recent surgery - Alyssa had been jumping on it daily! I too would like to hear why the BPI doctor said no trampolines.
