Cathy:
What a wonderful tribute.

She reminds me of Doreit, Juliana's first therapist...I don't know if could have handled things without her.

You are so lucky to have had Marcelle in your life and you will never lose that.

Cathy,

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend and such a giving and beautiful person!

I did not know her, but it brought tears to my eyes reading such a wonderful tribute to this special person.

Thank you for bringing her contribution to the community to light. It is a well deserved acknowledgement.

Remember, she will always be with you as long as your remember her.

I would like to thank you for such a heart felt tribute to Marcelle. A person never knows anothers whole story. I knew Marcelle and I was at the picnic you wrote about. I remember the flowers on her head. My brother married into her family and I am so happy that he did. I met Marcelle several years ago and can tell you I loved her energy, her joy of life and the truth she seemed to always carry. I said many times over...how proud I was of her. I was proud yet I didn't know all that she had done, I was so happy to have read your post. I would like to know, Is there somewhere one can donate that Marcelle was directly involved with? One of the things you said in your post will forever stay in my heart...where you say you are internally grateful because your life's contributions had been shaped by Marcelle. Some people come into our lives and quickly go...Some people stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts...and we are never the same. I now know what that really means.

I was making plans to visit San Diego and remembered that Marcelle Karlin lived there and thought I would look her up. I was deeply saddened to learn of her passing. I knew her in the 1970's and 80s. She was every bit as wonderful back then as you have written, and she influenced me greatly. She was the Occupational Therapist at Gouverneur Hospital in lower Manhattan and I was a paraprofessional aide in a special needs classroom. She inspired me to go back to school and take premed courses, leading eventually to my becoming a child psychiatrist.I remember her as a good and helpful friend with an infectious optimism, a drive to make good things happen for people, and a love of life. Reading this is almost incomprehensible to me. Prior to my BPI daughter's birth, I cared for my mother -- over a thirteen year period -- that first had breast cancer, then bone cancer so widespread that the doctors could no longer treat by radiation, and then blood cancer. She died within weeks of that blood cancer. I cannot describe how much I miss her. If she were alive she would have been my constant companion through all of my daughter's PT, OT, testing and surgical appointments; she would have been my voice and my crutch.

My mother was a rare bird in her dedication and devotion, and clearly Marcelle Karlin was as well. I give great thanks for these kind and generous people everyday of my life...

Oh my gosh! I realize this is a year after the fact, but I just ran across this board in a search for something else. I remember Marcelle as a wonderful, empathetic and big hearted woman. I am so sorry to hear she is gone!

Kathy, how well I remember those early days. You had Marcelle, we had Monica for our OT therapist. Thank God for Marcelle in those early days when we had no clue about this condition and what to do about it. And bless her for all of her help and donated time to get families together. How well I remember those meetings in the old CH occupational therapy rooms. She really was a special person. God bless her!
