I am trying to get some more stuff together for "reasons". Do any of you have poly-cystic ovaries or hernias. I am asking just to be sure that there is no other risk factors for having large babies with shoulder dystocia. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Marlyn, from what I recall, there is a connection between poly cystic ovaries and hyperinsulinemia - and the blood sugar issue may certainly be a cause. Were you diagnosed with gestational diabetes? And if not, were tests done? and what tests?

Re: POLY CYSTIC OVARIES??? HERNIA??
Yes, I was didagnosed with poly cystic ovaries finally in '99. During first pregnancy. After many years of suffering irregular cycles, pain, cramps along with many other symptoms, I finally knew why and how to treat the symptoms. I also know how lucky I am to have gotten pregnant, most women with PCOS suffer from slight to severe infertility. Anyway, I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes with Javier after 2 borderline results. I had 2 1 hour and 2 3 hour glucose tolerance tests done. I was just asking to make sure that there is no connection between PCOS and hernias and shoulder dystocia. I truly believe that I have a small pelvis which is why both of my kids got stuck. I guess I will have to go to a doc to find out. It has been hard for me to trust OBgyns. Thanks for your post.

How weird. Yes, I have PCOS and I also have a hernia (which occurred after my third child was born, so it's not related to my second child, Danny, who has the BPI).
I never knew that about PCOS and a possible connection with large babies/shoulder dystocia. Danny was 12 pounds.
Please post again and tell me if you find out any connection between PCOS and SD! This is so interesting to me!
Thanks!
Janet

I sure will. PCOS caused my first son to have hypoglycemia when he was born. He was 9.2 lbs and spent 2 weeks in NICU. PCOS causes the over-production of insulin and therefore can cause a high birth weight. I will let you know what I get. By the way... 12 pounds. Geesh!!! I thought mine were big. Javier was 9.11 lbs. Is Danny still big? My older son, Manny was big for about the first 3 months of his life. He is very tall. But very skinny. Not thin, SKINNY. lol
Talk to you soon.

I did not have any of those things but I was noticing you sons weight at birth. 9.11 My son is 2 now and I remember crying and begging the nurses to put a different weight on his birth certificate( he was also 9.11) I joke now and say that he has been cursed since birth with 911. Just sorta seems to fit the situation. Sorry just thought that it was strange that they were both the same weight. Sorry Blonde Moment.

Re: POLY CYSTIC OVARIES??? HERNIA??
Marlyn, I was told that it was the opposite - that the insulin/blood sugar issues caused the PCOS and that if the blood sugar issues were well regulated and weight was lost, etc that the PCOS would go away.

Yes, Danny is still very big. He's the youngest kid in his preschool class and is a head taller than everyone else! At least no one will mess with him!
But hey, 9-11 is nothing to sneeze at - that's still a gigantic baby!
What is the connection between PCOS and the child being hypoglecemic? Do the cysts have some effect on the blood? Trying to piece it all together!
Thanks!
Janet

wow, never thought of that connection but it makes sense. I too have PCOD and my daughter was 9-13 LOBPI and my next was 9-7 3 weeks early(c-section). I knew PCOD had some sort of relationship with insulin. By the way, i passed both 1 hour and 3 hour glucose test but was told I was on the high side of the normal scale. Next pregancy (if it happens) I will be treated as gest diabetic.

Re: POLY CYSTIC OVARIES??? HERNIA??
I never expected this many replies. PCOS symptoms can be treated with diet and exercise, but the disorder itself will never go away. I was told after Manny was born that my body produced so much insulin during pregnancy that his body never taught itself how while in utero. He was very lethargic at birth and for about 8 hours afterwards. His apgar was 2 then 5. His blood sugar started out at 7 and had to get to at least 27 to be able to go home. I have suffered many years with PCOS, when I was 3 months old I had a hernia in which my left ovary became strangulated. Luckily it was saved with surgery, but even at 3 months old it was covered in cysts. I too passed all GTT tests with Manny and fell on the high end of normal with Javier. So, I was sent to a dietician who specialized in Gestational Diabetes. I controlled my blood sugar with diet. My last ultrasound estimated that Javier was 6.8 pounds and he was born just under 4 weeks later at 9.11 lbs. I have always thought that that was incorrect. But I do know that babies gain alot during the last few weeks of pregnancy. I just get so worked up sometimes. I had every indication showing that I would have a large baby with shoulder dystocia.
