Is anyone familiar with Dr Carlstedt and the work he's doing in the UK? My husband came across a case report of a surgery he performed on a 9 yr old boy who sustained a complete right brachial plexus avulsion (C5-T1), titled: "Restoration of hand function and so called "breathing arm" after intraspinal repair of C5-T1 brachial plexus avulsion injury". It was published in Neurosurg. Focus/Volume 16/May,04. We're hoping to find others who know of him and perhaps Surgeons in the US who are doing this type of work. The case report may be viewed at:

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Hi
Several of our members at the tbpi site in the uk have Thomas Carlstedt as their doctor. He is a very highly regarded tbpi doctor who has been experimenting with reimplantation of avulsed nerves for many years, with some success. He is collaborating with another doctor in Rome in this project. I don't think any doctors in the USA are doing reimplantation as yet.

Re: Info on Dr Thomas Carlstedt?
I know that one of the Mayo Clinic doctors, Dr. Alex Shin, was awarded a Fellowship that allows his to travel all over the world this year, meeting with other prominent bpi surgeons. Dr. Carlstedt is among the doctors he'll be visiting.
I'm positive nobody in the US is doing that procedure - because we ALL would have heard about it by now! I'll see if somebody at Mayo can tell me why it's not (yet) being done in the States.
Take care,
Ellen
