I was wondering if anyone can answer this question? A friend of mine is having a hard time coming up with funds for the trip, and since we always stay at the Ronald McDonald House (unfortunately they don't allow new Erb's families to stay there anymore), I couldn't help her.
Any input would be great. Thanks! Wendy
Least Expensive Hotel in Houston Med Ctr?
Re: Least Expensive Hotel in Houston Med Ctr?
I paid $69 at the Marriott for the Entertainment card rate. Also back then the Best Western (new one right in the medical center) was $59. All the numbers are found at http://www.injurednewborn.com/maia/travel.html.
If there is a real hardship, then there are foundations that will help with lodging. I have them listed in the resource page

btw - you only need hotel for the night before...
you can sleep in the hospital - there is a double couch in the room that two can share.

Re: Least Expensive Hotel in Houston Med Ctr?
Hi,Wendy. We stayed at the Econolodge 1.5 miles down the street at the medical rate of 41.95 a night. They have a shuttle to go back and forth to the hospital, refrigerators in the rooms which were clean andf comfortable and they are right across the street from Super Target and Albertson's for take out meals and groceries. Also K-mart ,Olive Garden, and Long John Silvers behind and in the back parking lot a little diner that opens at 6:30 a.m. that has great Biscuits and gravy for a couple of bucks for breakfast. We were low on funds too! It was the cheapest we could find. Make sure you ask all the hotels when calling for Medical rates, AAA rates, and/or any travel club rates to compare. Hope I helped! I was just wondering why the RM house would not let new BPI families stay there..is there a particular reason?

Re: Least Expensive Hotel in Houston Med Ctr?
Hi, Christy. The way I understand it is that it's really reserved for more life-threatening illnesses. Houston has a huge medical center (the largest in the country? I think). So, I'm sure the RM house gets a lot of requests at the Houston facility. I think it probably varies by location as to who they will house there. Thankfully, when we go to Houston for BPIs our non-hospital stay can usually be very short 1-2 or 3 nights or so; whereas, some families are there for weeks or longer for medical care. The RM house was on the first hotel list we got from Lisa Davis so I imagine that they used to accept BPI families there.
I hope you and Miss Katie and family are doing well.

Thanks Tina..I was just curious. I understand it being reserved but I also know that this type of "requirement" is not allowed at our local RM house, although it is mostly used by NICU and burn families.
All is ok. Katie's birthday is coming up soon and one would think that it would be a joyous time. And it is but those feelings of fright come back. nightmares of seeing her getting cpr, intubated...it just overwhelms. plus she suddenly went from constant movement of her arm to very little movement again overnight and she looks very much dislocated.
hope all is well with you, troy and nicole. write soon
