Osteotomy

Post by admin »

My daughter is being advised to get the forearm osteotomy. Has anyone had this for the forearm being too much in supination? What were the results? Did they lose function? What was made better by the surgery? What is the splinting like? Was there a lot of pain? How was the healing time? I am in need of lots of information and any information that I can get. She is going to be scheduled to have the surgery very soon in Texas. Can someone out there please help me?

This is a great list of questions. You should take them to your doctor as he can best tell you most of them! Dont ever be afraid to ask questions of the doctor! That is what he is there for!

have you already maxed the recovery with TES, splinting and therapy - My son is 13 years and we learned new ways to get recovery from Dr.Pape this past year and he has gained about 90 degrees supination he has never had - osteotomy was recomended last year by three of the more prominent surgeons - but in our case there was hidden recovery waiting there - we just had to learn some new things to get it working - you would think after 13 years we would have all we could have gotten but we were pl;eased to see that there is more he can get yet- but we had to change what we were doing.

DeShawn,
Was it the forearm or the humoral osteotomy? Thank you.

My daughter just had the forearm osteotomy two weeks ago because she had too much supination. As far as pain, she has had very little. She is in a cast like someone who breaks their arm. I know how she was limited doing things by having too much supination, so I do feel she will benefit greatly from this procedure. Dr. Davino did the procedure.

Kimberly,
Can you please tell me more information about this. What age is your child who had it done? How long in a cast? Will there be any loss of function from the surgery? Do you have to go back to Houston in 6 weeks to get the pin removed? What else can you tell me about the procedure? I am looking for any information. Thank you so much.

Brittany is 7. She will be in a cast for 6 weeks and then Dr. Davino will remove the cast and x-ray to make sure everything is Ok. The pin will come out in 6 months. He said it takes that long for the bone to completely heal inside and out, and that the pin can not come out before then. He said that procedure can be done in his office if the child is brave, if not they do it at the hospital with the child asleep. I do not think there will be any loss of function because nerves or muscles were not involved. I know she will gain a lot of functions that she can not do now just by getting rid of the supination. The procedure was short and simple. It takes longer to get them to sleep and prepped for surgery than the actual surgery. The surgery itself only took about 45 minutes. I really think that your child will benefit from this is he has supination. It is just rotating the bone to get it in the neutral position. It was an outpatient surgery, so we left the hospital that evening. Everything went smoothly. Hope this answers some of your questions.
