I've heard of botox bein' used for Erb's and BPI but HOW and WHY? Wouldn't paralyzing more muscle be a BAD thing? Or is it for pain? I know what it does--it's a toxin that "paralyzes" muscle. So how's that help us? I'm paralyzed ENOUGH thanyou very much.

BOTOX--help--I don't get it!!!
Re: BOTOX--help--I don't get it!!!
I know a person with peripheral nerve damage and scapula winging who had botox injections during surgery to supposedly fix her nerve problems. She is much worse after the operation and swearing never to do it again. The medical community have comprehensively ignored her and left her a complete mess. I wouldn't go anywhere near botox treatment but that's just my personal opininon.

I don't understand the medical use of Botox either! Just my opinion, again, but the last thing I think you would want to do is paralyze the muscles you want to get functioning also.
I too have heard of a few cases of more damage being done with this and I can't recall hearing any positive outcomes... but then again, maybe someone will come by who has had some success with this.
Unfortunately, often when someone finds a treatment that worked for them, they fail to return to these boards to share this information because they are busy getting on with their lives (and so we may tend to hear more of the negative outcomes than the positives on these boards).
I do know for certain that my aunt was treated for Dystonia with Botox and has had great difficulty swallowing ever since!
I'm not a fan, obviously, would never submit myself to this and I personally believe it should be used for cosmetic (wrinkle) purposes only.
Does anyone even know if this treatment has been "approved" for this purpose or are doctors just taking advantage of patients for financial gain or possibly just grasping at straws because they don't know what else to do?
I too would love to hear from anyone who has truly had great success with Botox.

Re: BOTOX--help--I don't get it!!!
Hi Ronin I get 7 injections of botox in my neck and upper back every 4 months, but it's not for bpi; it's for the torticolis I also suffered from the accident.
My neck is twisted downward and to the left. This is how I was positioned the moment I was hit by the bus (I was turning around to see what all the fuss was about!). The muscles "froze," and pt didn't help. In fact, the physical therapist said it was a mental problem, so I spent months going to counselors, which also didn't help. By the time I saw a surgeon, the bones had fused in this crooked alignment and surgery was no longer an option.
The botox doesn't fix the problem, just loosens up the muscles a bit to give me a little flexability.
