Patty,
I am so sorry to hear of your friend's injury. I have a tramatic bpi and was told that I waited too late for the type of help that would have taken the pain completely away. Time is of the essence, get your friend to Dr. Nath in Houston immediately. This injury must be examined by Dr. Nath to see if he can help your friend, but it must be done so within 1 year of the injury to get better results from any type of procedure that can help him/her from Dr. Nath. I have had to have a rib taken out in order to give the nerve and arteries room to heal. However, not all injuries are the same and each one is dealt with differently. However, Please get your friend to Dr. Nath. I cannot stress this enough.

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Hi there, here is a website re brachial plexitis http://www.aafp.org/afp/20001101/2067.html it seems slightly different from a bpi and the authors make a point of stressing that an accurate diagnosis is necessary to avoid unnecessary surgery. Make sure any specialist your friend may see is very experienced with adult onset injuries, many specialise mainly in infant obpi cases.
