How to decide when to get surgery-

Post by julieszekeres »

My 5 year old son has BPI- My husband and I can't decide when he should get the surgery. We are afraid he will lose the usage he has worked so hard to get. Hopefully, someone that has been there can help make this decision easier?

Thanks for sharing your info. It is the Mod Quad surgery that my son is needing. I know that we need to get this done. Hearing how well your daughter is doing is a great help! Thanks

I am 38 and just had the mod quad done with Dr. Nath in Houston and wish I had done it when I was a kid so as not to have lost so many years. Prior to surgery, for example, I could only lift my arm 30* and 10 days after surgery I have passive range to 155* (180* being straight up). It is just amazing. Dr. Nath says with kids he can get them up 180* close to 100% of the time - don't wait till he is an adult if you can do something now - just my 2 cents. His website is http://www.drnathbrachialplexus.com/inj ... _after.asp
Click on the Mod Quad surgery to see what is done, then click on the little boy directly under the Mod Quad surgery example - both on the left sides of the videos.
He also has a decision tree on his website.

Good luck - Suzy

I'm 31 and I just found out what my "arm problem" is all about...it only took a visit to a generic orthopedic! Erb's Palsy. Now I can't read enough about it. I'm AMAZED how many other people share my life experience. I am fortunate to have great range of motion and dexterity. However, it's quite disfiguring- and getting rapidly worse as I age. I now have pain and my "wing" is spreading. My shoulder seems to be falling forward onto my chest. I know my elbow is sticking out further these days because I bump into walls with much greater frequency. LOL.

I am deciding whether or not to see a more specialized orthopedic surgeon at Georgetown Univ. Hospital. What are the possibilities? What is mod quad?

I'd love to hear from anyone who has had surgery as an adult. Also, any insights from others who have had worsening symptoms with age would be appreciated.
