Good news and upcoming operation info

Post by diargasm »

The cross c7 surgery I had seems to have gone through. Whenever Dr. Edgerton taps my shoulder I can feel it tingle all the way to my opposite hand. I don't know how much effect it will have because I can already lift my shoulder up 90 degrees. But I'm happy being 2 for 2.

My tricep started working again after 10 months of my injury. I can extend my arm more and more easily every month.

On december 13 I'll have yet another operation to get my wrist and fingers to extend.

thanks for everyone's support for over the past year. i'm so glad i found this message board.

Congratulations on your awesome news! You're an inspiration to the rest of us - not only your successful surgeries to date, but also your interest in asking lots of questions along the way.

Keep us posted on how things go after 12/13. What will your doctors be doing in the surgery?

Take care,

Ellen

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

ok, i'm back. the surgery went well according to my doc, but this cast is bugging the hell out of me. I'm paranoid whenever it goes below my heart because my doc says that it swell up. My fingers are soar as well. Not to mention it weighs like a ton a bricks.

karlos, did you strech your fingers after your op? they hurt whenever i slightly bend them? Another thing that is bothering me is that my thumb is cramped in the cast and there is no way I can straighten it! What do I do? And am I supposed to be able to extend my wrist and fingers right after the op, or does it come later?

Hi dude,
Your fingers are gonna be solid for around a month when the cast comes off, then youll need plenty of phisio to get them supple again.

Its hard and quite painfull to get them loosend up but as soon as the are you will be able to streighten them almost immediately, it took me around 3mth to get the fingers supple again but after a year i could use the hand/wrist very well and was happy with the results.

When the cast comes off you will be able to see slight improvements almost streight away
