Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

OK I did it! I am sooooooooo lazy but managed to crunch those numbers again. Here are the results so far.....

Total tbpi on this thread 175
Males 106 females 62 unspecified 7

I only include people who post on this thread, not elsewhere, although I’m aware that many others have posted whose details are not included here. If you aren’t on here and want to be counted, add yourself on! I only count tbpi but of course anyone is welcome to post :0)

Causes remain similar with the addition of xigger’s combine and also the guy chased by yellowjackets.... I decided to put that one in with the falls. Motorcycles are still way ahead of all other causes, but that’s to be expected of an injury known as “biker’s palsy” in the UK health service. Car/vehicle crashes are still second with physician caused bpi third. Quad bike/ATV injuries have moved ahead of bicycles.

Causes where specified

Motorcycle 70
Car/truck accident 24
Iatrogenic injury (physician caused) 17
Pedestrian hit by vehicle 9
Quad bike/ATV 6
Bicycle 4
Bus accident 1
Snowmobile 3
Tree falling 3
Fall 3
Airbag 2
Powerboat accident 2
Gunshot 2
Horseriding 2
Snowboarding 1
Skiing 1
Ski lift 1
Tumour 1
Throwing softball 1
Knocked over by dog 1
Overuse at work 1
Tractor/posthole digger 1
Sign falling 1
Wall falling 1
Heavy door falling 1
X ray equipment falling 1
Climbing accident 1
Waterski accident 1
Jetski 1
Playground accident 1
Football 1
Watching movie 1
Exercise bike fall 1
Combine 1

Nationalities where specified

USA 102
England 22
Scotland 4
Ireland 1
Isle of Man 1
Canada 5
New Zealand 2
Australia 1
Jordan 1
Italy 1
Portugal 1
South Africa 1
Singapore 1
Israel 1

Thank you so much to all who have added yourselves in so far. It must be the longest thread on these message boards and probably the oldest active thread as well. These aren't by any means meant to be definitive figures but they tell a story - for instance, although motorcycles are easily the commonest cause, they still account for a lot less than half of the injuries. The diversity is amazing.

I'll be back in a month or 3 to do it all again, thanks again all, take care :0)

Wow Jen what a wonderful job you do. I will post again for Michael just to adjust your number from Australia 1 to increase it.
Hi my name is Michael and I live in Sydney Australia. I suffered a rbpi after motorcycle accident in May this year.
I think Gayle is the other one. Maybe we need Jamie to post again to increase the Aussie contingent!!!!
Thanks again Jen and sorry to give you more work...regards Narelle
