Hi folks,
Received a report from Michael's doctor (right BPI)as to what extent Michael's BPI was and what was done on reconstruction surgery on 4th August. During this surgery (15 hours) they did the exploratory first and then made their decision was to what was the best possible result they could get. Michael had an avulsion of the C7, C8 and T1. There was a rupture of the upper trunk and damage to the C6. The C5 nerve root was still attached and was available for grafting. They then did nerve transfers (too long to go into full detail) in an attempt to obtain shoulder stability, some elbow flexion, wrist stability and finger flexion.
In reading the messageboards, there seems to be several different procedures in order to get movement etc back after BPI injury. Some people have had tendon transfers, muscle transfers etc. My question is what time frame after an intial nerve transfer op was the next procedure carried out (if any) and is the next procedure done based on what progress is made. Does this make sense to you all ! ! !
Michael is not due to go back to Doc until December, so I was hoping to get a bit of light shed on this subject before then.......thanks Narelle

Re: BPI Operations
Cheers JGJ - Thanks for reply. I also noted that we seem to be the only ones that do everything in one hit with initial surgery. I am yes very dumb at some things, but what is "DREZ". Have noted that Gayle is looking into it, but not quite sure what it involves etc. Perhaps you know of a site where I can get more info. I'm like a sponge at the moment (besides alcohol.....just kidding) I'm trying to soak up everything I can re this injury..........regards Narelle (P.S. How is Jack's break going).

Phew...that article you posted a link to was a bit heavy going, Court! ;0) Pity there isn't something out there that can be read without a medical dictionary at hand! V. Good info though. Interesting to see that they have been doing these procedures in Europe since the 1970's.
A slightly more readable article is this one http://www.iasp-pain.org/PCU01-2.html It also shows results of studies using all the 'traditional' drugs and other ablative surgical treatments used for SCI. Some people will recognise the various drugs used in these studies and the conclusions that they come to. Plenty of other articles out there, particularly on the Pubmed site, but I still think that the best info usually comes from people who have actually had the procedure. This thread on the TBPI Group website is pretty informative http://p072.ezboard.com/fadultswithbrac ... =689.topic
