Supination

Post by Julie Surber »

My son had surgery a few years ago to have this corrected and it didn't work. I have been unable to get an actual same answer to why it didn't work. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Do you know of something else to make it work correctly? He is so limited because he cannot supinate his left arm.

Julie,

What surgery did your son have?

It took several years after our daughter's Mod Quad before we saw the beginnings of supination. She can now supinate, but it still takes effort.

Your son's recovery depends on what nerves were initially damaged and where, etc and what surgery was performed.

I would speak with the surgeon and also other BPI Specialists.

Good luck.

Ist surgery was the Mod Quad, then he had several things done in his 2nd surgery including the pronator teres transfer for supination.3rd surgery was bicep lengthening.

Julie,

It is possible for internal rotation contractures to occur after secondary surgery such as MQ. If that isn't preventing the supination, then it sounds like the pronator transfer didn't work? How long ago was it? There is recovery and essentially "rewiring" time that is necessary before a transferred muscle works effectively in the new position.

The only other thing I've heard of for this problem is an osteotomy, which essentially takes the existing range of movement and "shifts it" by permanently rotating the bones in the forearm.

Matthew could not supinate after mod quad, he had another procedure done last year which has given him almost full supination.

Do you know what that surgery was? I have been told that my son should have an osteotomy. Does anyone know what this entails and what is done and did it disrupt any previous advancements in the shoulder, arm, wrist or hand.

Julie,
Matthew had the anterior capsule release. It's different than the osteotomy. I thought I had some good links with info about the osteotomy surgery, I'll post them later if I can find them.

Julie, Blake had primary, MQ, biceps lengthening and caps and still cannot supinate. He is almost 7yrs old and is going to TX for acromio with Dr. Shenaq in 2 weeks. Blake's shoulder is internally rotated again and Nath said that caps didn't work as well as they hoped. We are looking forward to finding out more in TX and hopefully they can do something to help his supination. Blake actually said he is looking forward to surgery because he wants to turn his hand over.
