Any suggestions on velcro clothing?

Post by beckychaffin »

Due to the difficulty of dressing? I would like to find somewhere that sells clothing with velcro or easy snaps or something? Any suggestions? I would like for my son to be somewhat independent to reduce embarrassment at school (2nd Grade). Thanks.

Becky, with the help of a great OT my daughter can dress herself. I just buy pullover shirts and pants with elastic waistbands. I buy them a bit bigger. The OT suggested that if it's bigger it's easier. She can even do little ankle socks one-handed. SHe does wear velcro sneakers but that is the only velcro item she has. This winter we have a down jacket that snaps and she can do the snaps. She does not have button down shirts or wear turtle necks sweaters but she has mastered putting on and taking off a tight bathing suit one-handed. We started at a young age and it took 2 years but your child at 2nd grade with a higher maturity level should be able to "get it" much faster than mine did. Once they can dress themselves independently, nothing stops them. I remember the "free" feeling mine danced around with - it made her so happy to dress herself. Good luck!

My daughter is starting Kindergarten in a few weeks. I am nervous about her pulling up her pants after she uses the bathroom. In the past I have always been around to help her zipper and snap. Has anyone tried sewing velcro over the snap or zipper on pants? I know that for right now I can buy stretch pants, but at some point that will become more difficult.

Michelle
I sewed velcro over his snaps and buttons and so far it works great! Now I am going to put in a paper clip or something in the loop of the zipper handle thingy just to make it longer and easier for him to zip up.

I teach elementary school, it is not unusual for the little ones, up to second grade, to need help with fastners on pants. My little one is three, I buy jeans and dress pants that have elastic in the back a size larger than what she needs. She can pull the pants on and off without having to unfasten the snap or button then.
