Exercising

Post by kissygoose »

Before my arms started hurting real bad I worked out at Curves. I haven't been in a couple of weeks but I'm noticing that I'm getting sore more offten and such and really could use to go back to working out. I don't have my EMGs till the 17th and I hate to wait that long to return. Do you think it would be ok for me to go back to working out at Curves?

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

I don't know what machines you are using. I tried working out and doing weight training about 10 years ago. I hoped to build strength in my arms ( I did not know that it would be impossible to gain strenght in robpi arm) and that is how I hurt both shoulders.

I tried curves but using both arms on their machines was impossible for me even when I compensated and placed the robpi arm up with my left arm... my shoulders were killing me. I would check with my doctor or if you have a PT ask what motions you should and should not be doing.

If it is hurting, don't do it If it is a machine, can you lower the weight? I know at PT she has me lifing some weights, we started at only 1/2 a pound. Now I am doing 1 1/2 pounds....but that has taken me about a month and a 1/2 to get to.

I would check with them except the my GP doesn't know and neither does the nuerologist since they haven't seen me and they don't have me in any PT or anything yet. I guess I'll hold off then.

I think I did more harm to my arms trying to make them stronger and felt that if I hired a personal trainer that would help... no it made it worse and some PT's I used did not have a clue on how to treat and OBPI. My PT ( who is great) really took and interest and explained to me all the muscles that are not functioning.
I had rotator cuff problems in both arms after using the gym... its seems no one realized I cannot build muscle on the right arm... I did not understand it at the time. I thought that I needed strength training on the unaffected arm only to find our it was worn out and needed a break...I would wait if I were you until you see a real bpi specialist before you begin a program... sorry I am sure you were anxious to begin.
