I was doing a search on hip dysplasia (in response to Angela Butterfly's post) and found this link.

I was wondering: Does anyone have a child with torticollis in addition to BPI? It seems to me I have seen people write about it before on here, but I'm curious to hear more about it. I guess until now, I may not have been paying close attention to any previous discussions about it.
Also, if your child does have hip problems, have you just done PT to help? or have you needed to brace your child? Thanks!

Re: Any children with torticollis?
O.K. Janet, this is kind of scarey. It is my 3rd child that was a very obvious LOBPI child.
The one I was describing for hip dysplasia is my 1st. The article you refered to also was right along with BPI. The torticollis in addition to refering to hip dysplasia, also spoke of c-spine anomolies. My oldest also has Kyphosis and Lumbar Lordosis. I am not aware of any torticollis, she might have had, but all this listed together, sure makes me wonder.....Just what is going on with my oldest daughter?
It seems like a parent needs to have a medical degree in order to get our childrens needs met. Now that I am 50+ it seems a little late. Oh well there is always grandkids.

Re: Any children with torticollis?
My son had torticollis secondary to his BPI. Apparently, according to his therapists, it is very common to have torticollis from the BPI. We have just done PT to help it and now it is completely resolved. It was resolved before he was a year old. No bracing was necessary in his case, but from what I hear, a lot of children get flat heads from it and need to wear a helmet to correct it. This was not the case with our son, though. Also, I think that the bracing for the torticollis itself is fairly mild and corrects the torticollis pretty easily, but we have not dealt with that directly. I hope that helps!
Re: Any children with torticollis?
My daughter, Kate, is 15 months old with ROBPI, tortocollis and hip dysplasia from birth. She was in the pavlik harness at birth and then in another hip brace from 6 months old until she was 12 months old.
She is doing PT and OT three times a week. Her tortocollis is almost non-existent at this point from therapy and also from mod quad surgery. She has her hips x-ray every 3 to 6 months. Feel free to email me if you want more info.

Matthew had torticollis which seemed to mostly resolve until he had primary. Then a few months after primary it resolved again. We used pt to help with the issue.
With Matthew's hip problems we used a chiropractor.

Angela - I agree with you on the need for a medical degree! I feel that way, too. That is really interesting about your first child. I wonder what all happened there.
So here is my follow-up question, kind of related to what Guest posted ... is torticollis a result of BPI, or a totally different birth injury that had nothing to do with the BPI? I'm just so intrigued, because I understood the hip problem to be a secondary injury from the BPI, but now I am wondering how these injuries fit together, if at all. I guess I need to do a lot more reading! Does anyone know the answer?

Re: Any children with torticollis?
They way our pt explained it is that torticollis is a result of bpi (in Matthew's case and most cases she has seen). Torticollis can occur on its own. In cases with bpi it happens due to the weakness caused by the nerve damage.

Hey Janet!
Ella had torticollis as a baby. She also got deformational plagiocephaly from this. She favored looking towards the injured side which caused her skull to flatten on that side. We tried to fix this with positioning during sleep and with neck exercises, but that didn't work. We had to get her a molding helmet to correct the problem. She wore the helmet for a few months and now she is fine.

Hi Janet,
Your post was so interesting to me, considering I am just a lurker now, as my daughter Taylor, is 1 now, and had a spontaneous recovery of an Erb's palsy in her left arm. But, I found it very interesting as yes, she has been and still is in physio for torticollis. She was diagnosed with tort at the same time as left Erb's palsy. This site is for brachial plexus injuries, and I find it so interesting and sad of course, but I am always reading. What could have been????? The torticollis, has been our struggle, but the other issue with that website was the clavicle injury, Taylor was born with a broken clavicle. That really got to me. Please respond and reply in any way.
Thanky you very much.
Dawn.
