I am 28 years old and have I developed this problem a few months ago. It started with a little pain on the right side of my mid back. I tought I was just stiff and did some weights to loosen it up. Well that was the wrong idea. I have been to 6 doctors and none of them can tell what exactly is wrong. This is a rare condidtion a specialist must be seen. If you have had this condition for 10 years, its safe to say that the promlem is not going to fix itself, like many cases do.
Your only option is surgury... I do recomend this. I know with myself, because the scapula muscles are not working properly, when I lift, pull or push with any strength other muscles have to conpensate for the muscles not working. This causes more back pain, arm pain, and if thing stiffen up too much the pain is very extream. Do yourself a favor and have the sugury while you body is still young enough to heal quikly and properly.

The pain is crazy, I went through it. Mine lasted about 6 weeks. Once the pain is gone it shouldn't return. Doctor have many drug to choose from. I really recomend

VOIXX, VIOXX, VIOXX

I tried others, but they did nothing. Heat and cold pack will help too.

Baseball players. Even though this condition is rare, the most commom people to get it are ball playes, or sports that players through objects hard. In your sons case, he may just be injuring the muscle when he pitches. I recomend scapula exercises to keep the muscle strong between games. But I would be careful, young boys and girls are not fully developed, thus the reason some people disagree with hardball for kids inder 16. I remember hearing all about the this peticular baseball health hazzard when I played at 14 years old.

Hi Beth,
I was reading some of the replys, I was wondering when you got your scapula, did it take 4/5 days before the pain set in. I fell in a bathtub, went fishing for the weekend, when we got back, I experienced this unbearable pain????? Thats when I found out that I have a scapula. Any other readers out there please reply. Thank-you Lynne

How can you all be sooo.. complacent!!?? This injury has disruptedand is threatning to ruin my life! Are there others out there who feel this way?! I look on the net for answers, but all I find are cold clinical factoids about the injury, NOT how to become healthy again, with or without surgery. The only doc I can find that knows ANYTHING about this is Dr Nath..... and i dont exactly have the funds, time off work , and the gonads to fly to @#$ texas! Is thr rest of the medical comm total idiots, or do u just not care about people suffering with this condition. I am very mad now, I never read anything positive in this @#43forum, people never have good news for each other, we need to band together in order to DO SOMETHINg about this!!!

Im 30 years old and also have this lovely problem! I also went thru a large amount of doctors. Only one doctor claimed he was familiar with this problem. This was a far cry from the truth, he had little experience in my opinion. He brought all the doctors, interns, you name it they were in the room like I had the rarest condition on earth. I also am looking forward to playing ball with my son age 3 but wonder if this is always going to be in my life. This injury was caused by a blunt trauma to the chest at work which took 6 months for work comp to start paying. I have only one bit of advice to give to all you fellow wingers REST IS THE BEST DON'T PUSH IT AT ALL! There is a reason why some of the many doctors I went to see said no rehab. The reason is rehab will only agrivate the condition and possibly make it worse. My job is physically demanding and I have been off for 9 months. I have went from losing mobility from shoulder high up with pain in the neck and scapular area. To getting mobility back with extreme pain at first in neck and scapular area. Now presently I have compensation pain in my scapular area with less winging and lower back pain has developed. Im telling all of you its boring trust me I luv luv luv sports but don't use it and definately don't abuse it. Im confident it will take a cosiderable amount of time but will heel back so I can go back to my active lifestyle.

I have been off work since 1-15-2002. It started as a separated shoulder and resting it for a couple of weeks. Icould not move my arm after a couple of weeks I saw an orthopeadic surgeon and recommended therapy, three months of therapy,a mri, x-rays. after all this they decide to do a subcrominal decompression surgery, and after 6 months of therapy, two more mri's and two emg's they decide for more therapy and to try 4 different therapy places. A few months later the doc decides to send me to another neurosurgeon and he says there is nothing he can do. So I decide on getting another opinion, an other orthopedic surgeon and he decides to do a pec major transfer, I was very uncertain about this surgery but I did it anyway and now after seven more months and two more therapy places, I have as much pain as day one if not more , I still cannot get my arm past 90 degrees I am in work conditioning and the more it is used the more pain I have. This is a worker's compensation claim and every time I go to the doctor there seems to be another "solve all" opinion and there's been discussions of a possible 3rd surgery. Has anyone else been through this or have any advise?

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

mike,
I have read a lot of papers about winging scapula. There are as you say many methods of operating to fix it. But in all the literature I have never found anyone who claims to fix the pain-sometimes after surgery the pain is less, but there are no guarantees and often the pain is unaffected even if the winging stops.
Hope you get some relief soon

Hi G,

It sound like you have more then nerve damage. I'm not a doctor, but if you hear crunching sounds, its bone on bone... there is a surgury to correct the over-growth of bone on the scapula.
