Update on me

Post by BrianD »

Hey all,
Sorry it has been so long, but I am back. I am proud to say that one month after surgery my splint finally came off. I had the Mod Quad on May 13, and the PT said that I can finally take it off on June 14. I, like Kamren, am doing PT 2 time a week and aqua therapy once a week. I just left my first aqua therapy. WOW!! If any of you get the chance to do it I totally reccomend it. I was able to do things that I never could have before the sugery. I am so happy. And look I am typing with two hands again. :) Anyway, just thought I would let you all know how thing are going.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

WOW Brian

You must be jumping for joy... Aqua therapy I think is the best. I can't wait to hear about all your new movements.

Tell us what you have gained in one short month.

Happy for you

I have to agree on that Aqua therapy:) It is amazing what I can do in the water, that I can't on land:) I am only 2 weeks into my PT and the therapist is amazed at how much my ROM has improved. I hope it goes just as well for you!

I was so excited because the last 2 days I drove to my PT appt, and steered the car with only my BPI arm!:)

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

Brian,
CONGRATULATIONS!! The power of prayers is great, isn't it and I marvel that you only found UBPN in April!! All things ARE possible. Water therapy /excercise is really helping me too.I go to a local Woman's Health club pool every day that I can.You are never too old to learn new things...
Can't wait to meet you next Camp 2005! Start saving money...

Yes Kamren it is wonderful driving with it. I also drove home with my BPI arm after Aqua therapy. It is great. I can reach the back of my head now. I can somewhat rotate my arm when it is out to the side. I can't suppinate my hand yet. I don't think I will be able to. The doctor doesn't think that part of the surgery worked. However, I am learning new moves every day. I realize that I can do something new and I just start laughing. We are working on keeping my elbow at my side when I do things. Have any of you had that problem? Whenever I lift something, my elbow wings out. The PT thinks she can help me prevent that. I will keep you all posted on my progress. Also, I got an email from Glen. He had surgery last week and is learning a new life with his splint. I guess he is not home yet, but is keeping me updated. I will also let you know how he is doing. C-ya.

Yes...I am having the same problem...also with me lifting the whole shoulder, not just the arm. I have to concentrate to squeeze my shoulder blades together to keep me from lifting it.
