Hey I am back!! Most everything went well. Everything went smooth until the day after surgery. He did a muscle transfer, de-compressed my nerves, something with th tendons and shaved down my scapula bone. I guees it was overgrown which prevented me from raising my arm. Before surgery while I was asleep, he tried to raise my arm and it stopped at a little over 90 degrees. After surgery he got it upto about 180 degrees. It was a sucessful surgery. He doesn't think that the transfer worked though. He thinks that my arm will still turn inward. Maybe later he can fix that. I am just happy to be home. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. I get my dynamic splint next Mon. I guess that some of the pain will subside then. Anyway I will quite chicken pecking and go. Just thought I would give you all an update. Thanks again!!

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Glad to hear all went well:) That splint is sooo uncomfortable, but it will be worth it when we are done with it:)

Congratulations!! I am so happy for you that everything went well. You have been on my mind and in my prayers as well. I bet you can already tell a big difference even though your sore. Definately keep us posted. I am so happy for you. *HUGS*

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.
My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!
I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

i am a mother of a 18 year old boy who suffered a bp injury due to a motor bike accident 10 months ago. he had surgery within 4 days of the accident and has just undergone another surgical procedure to transplant a nerve from another part of his body and attachedit to the spinal cord and the shoulder. we know he has to undergo several muscle transfers. will it be worth it in the end or are we keeping his hopes up just to let him come crashing down.

I have not yet been able to use my arm to see if the surgery was worth it. What I can tell you is that I am glad I had it done, either way it turns out. I can't tell you how much it drove me crazy not being able to do certain things. I finally found out about this surgery and can't wait for the results. The splint comes off in a couple of weeks so I will let you know more then. In the mean time all I can say is that as long as there is a possibilty, keep trying. Where there is a will there is a way.

I had my surgery about 6 weeks ago. I can already see improvement in my movement. I can touch my hair, I could shake someones hand with my OBPI hand, I can put my hair in a pony tail without have to have something to prop my arm up to help.
With PT, I know it will get even better:) I feel that the surgery was worth every fight with the insurance, every tear, every argument....I will be able to swim for the first time in my life soon....I would definatly do it again. I just wish I had known about it sooner!
