My name is Adam. My brachial plexus was ripped when I was born. I am turning 22. I hate the fact that I have this problem. It causes depression in my life. Im getting better though. I am an athlete.

Adam, hang in there!! I think we all go through our bouts with depression. That's why this message board is so great to have. You can vent and we listen. Feel free to e mail me if you need to talk. And congrats on being an athelete...what sports do you play??

Hi Adam! I'm new to the forum too. I think we've all gone through depressing times with self-consiousness about our arm or just not being able to do something. I was an athlete before, played ice hockey and volleybll, not too bad at them either :-) but I would always get frustrated when my left arm wouldn't cooperate or start hurting. Just gotta get through it though, playing sports is a good way not to think about it. I wish I could play more but with work and school, hardly any time for it anymore.
Wish you the best, and keep your head up!

Oh Judy,

Way to funny! Bring back great memories.

Welcome Adam and Shannon to our website. As Judy said, if you have any questions just ask. I have a son who was in a motorcycle accident 4 years ago and had met wonderful people and learned so much from this group.

Best to you both,

Karen

Hi Adam & Shannon

Well to the wacky world of obpi message board.

We are all still discovering new things about this injury. One of the most rewarding parts of this message board is having a place to vent and talk. I was 60 when I found UBPN... I am 64 robpi and had tons of questions about my arm and my odd little quirks - it was great to realize that so many of us had the same little quirks...

FYI - Tim and Ralph --- Nancy B. husband Tim and my husband Ralph... they live this injury with us since we are both so involved with UBPN. Just in case anyone forgets they are the two men in the canoe who turned over on Lake George while protecting the three OBPI's in a canoe. ( we did not turn over) Needless to say that is the most memorable event of Camp UBPN 2004 ... LOL... next to Judy's husband Dave getting a bit lost on the trails while hiking...

feel free to e-mail - I noticed my e-mail is not on my Kath sign in... sorry about that...

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".
There is NO SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.
