OK, so I should be writing one of the two papers due this week (anyone considered an expert on the Cuban Missile Crisis, or Paleolithic Anthropology please email me) but I wanted to share something:
Since November 2002 I've been getting shots of a steroid into my shoulder to reduce the swelling caused by the muscles pulling on the joint. Essentially, because an adult BPI shoulder is structured differently that a regular shoulder due to the enervation of certain muscles and not others, my (our?) shoulders react to everyday type stress differently. The stress apparently was mainly caused by the motions of my arm while making prints (from etched metal plates) as per my major in college: fine art printmaking. The stresses and swelling caused by the actions was painful enough to necessitate a shot about every 12 weeks (and the needles are huge) until last October when I cut back drastically in the amount of printmaking I do to virtually none, and the pain hasn't resurged enough to need another shot (I think the specific name of the steroid is Celestone).
So now I'm switching majors, and graduate schools, trying to pursue a career in political administration or public policy. I was wondering if anyone else has had to make any major changes in their lives because of this injury, because I could use someone to talk to. I thought I was doing ok, but now I'm begining to think maybe I'm not.
Thanks,
Carrie

Re: Changes...
Hey Carrie,
Hang in there. I believe we all do get some sort of pain from any type of stress sent to the shoulder. The other day I was lifting a couple of 40lb bags, one at a time, and about 10 min. later my shoulder was hurting. It is amazing how quickly the pain can be set off just doing everyday "normal" jobs. I originally went to college to get a degree in Criminal Justice. I shamefully dropped out of college and had a stint of a couple of possible careers but nothing made me happy like being an officer would have made me. So, I decided to get into shape to join the department. I soon realized that I can't do the minimum requirements for push-ups and bench pressing. Everytime I try I feel like my shoulder is going to give out. I recently decided to try and go back to get my degree in C.J. and then possibly go on to Law school. I am only 24 years old so I have plenty of time to do so. I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason. In my opinion God has a plan for every single one of us and maybe this is His plan for you and I. Good luck on you decision and your papers. And sorry but I know nothing about either of those topics. Let me know if you need anything else.
Brian
p.s. I do know one thing about the Cuban misslie Crisis . . . It happened, I think!!!

I really can't advise you on direction but I can tell you over the course of my life, my plans have been altered many times not because I lost interest but because my arms gave out.
A few years ago I took up pottery I love the wheel. I use to all but drool when I would see someone throw a pot, it was my hearts desire to work on pottery. Every time I tried to take lessons I was discouraged and told I could not do it and forget about it. . I finally took some courses and found I could center a pot but I do it differently. I was so happy working on the wheel and I never wanted to get off I worked sometimes for hours but I had to stop because my arms and hands gave out. My wheel and kiln are brand new and I have been unable to use them for over a year... but my husband set up a whole room for me so I still have hope that soon I can go back and work sometimes for short periods.
We have to find things that do not physically impact our body and sometimes that does not go along with our hearts desire. Save the print making for your own personal pleasure Maybe one day you will sell enough prints to higher help for the heavy work and be famous this way you do not have to give up your dream..
Yes, the Cuban Missile crisis did happen I was young, working and worried about the future and now it is so far in the past that most people have forgotten about it.
Good Luck in choosing a direction

Re: Changes...
Carrie,
This is the university professor speaking here.
The average college student changes major 3-4 times. If this is your first change of major, you are way above average (we know you are above average!)
Public policy is a great field and its popularity as a graduate program of note continues to grow.
I know you will do well at whatever you do, and that you want to do work that is meaningful and satisfying.

Re: Changes...
I just realized I've been reading and posting messages here for 3 years...
one by one, thanks to all
Brian:
I appreciate the support, and good luck going back to school
Francine:
You know i'm always around, I just don't post much anymore, it's not that I don't have anything to say, I just leave it up to others if I can't add anything someone hasn't
Kath:
You're always an inspiration, if you need someone to break in that wheel and kiln for ya, I'll come visit, haha, bpi pots for awareness (they'll have one handle! lol)
Nancy:
Well, it is my first change in major. . .who knows maybe I'll stop following in my dad's footsteps and try yours and my mom's, library science! Find me in those pictures yet?
Seriously, though I'm doing better, I've finished the papers on Paleolithic Art/Anthropology and on the Cuban Missile Crisis. Now there's just a final critique, an oral presentation, and two finals.
