Hi Gina! I am sorry to hear of your fiances accident, but glad that you have found this website as it can help with the questions the two of you are facing! Also check out the TBPI wesite that some greaT peeps have set up in the UK. http://www.tbpiukgroup.homestead.com/index_1.html
As for the pain, mine got better with surgery, I had a nerve graph and later a nerve transplant. To my knowledge the pain gets more bearable, but never really goes away. There are a few people who have posted here and there who really dont experience the pain that most of us speak of. I have been off of all of my meds for almost two and a half years, with my crash being almost three years ago. I have HUGE spasms in my hand and fingers that really hurt like hell but I have just learned to deal with them I guess. As far as pain goes, that about it for me these days! I do find that keeping busy, mentally & physically, helps a bunch with the pain as well.
I have two avulsions, C5 & C6, I have gotten pretty good hand function back as well, as those nerves were just stretched. I was right handed and I injured my right arm as well, so now I am a lefty! This is different for everyone as every injury differs a bit, I am sure that you are finding this out too!
Best of luck with everything and please feel free to ask questions al lthe time, no question is stupid as we have all been there before!
